gaumont CIC/UCI experimental overhead surround now up and running in my THX cinema .
after delaying making the other cable lead for few months . the wiring is little complex and had to make sure i do it right . as well as drawing diagram on white board .
this type of overhead surround hasn't been practiced in least this area of the uk , last around 1998 at gaumont/odeon 1 last heard the original overhead surrounds and in 1999 was revamped with JBL 8330 mkI x16 left/right half surrounds .
UCI had their experimental overhead surround i think removed and replaced with left/right half surrounds around 1998 or 1999 as well as CP500 installed and JBL sub 4645B .
so the overheads as i used to know them as hasn't much been practiced now for 25 years and before at gaumont 54 years .
i have to say i rather like the revisiting the overhead surround . denon avc-x8500h can't do it , the trinnov32 can't do it as its a special wiring .
i still have some experiments to do to get the balance , frequency tuning so if i use , atmos mixes on legit discrete atmos mixes for heights 1 2 3 .
the surround signal is being piggybacked from the Sony SDDS system output then sent to ( switcher box ) that has A B C D inputs and single output that is connected to the x3 Dolby SA10 in the main amp rack in the kitchen . the SA10 have to be set to default mode and i have to turn-down-off the amps for DOG 1 , DOG 3 , DOG 3 channels as the SA10 when in default has logic switching that activates for regular surround of the , left/right half surrounds .
i could use the DOG channels with split stereo surrounds .
actually when looking at gaumont/odeon 1 which had middle overhead surround ( mono discrete ) same mono discrete for left right . if anyone can see when using large picture and zoomed in a little bit . i could mimic that by switching off the gain/levels down on certain channels .
mimicking CIC/UCI is almost close as there 4 overhead surrounds each left right of the ceiling , but its very close indeed and i have good sound memory .
if i wanted to mimic gaumont screen 2 that used its surrounds as left/right half and x6 overhead some of the small pictures i can see the where overhead surround as well as pictures may have been taken around very early 1970's before Dolby Stereo CP50 was installed . listened to fair good amount of Dolby Stereo in this , screen all the star wars movies as well star wars also played in screen 1 .
