Let me briefly 'sample' the music used to be better thread by saying that the internet used to be better - before undergraduates were allowed to use it. But the big drop was when html was invented.

Personally, I went through a few BBS’, then was frequent to a few (professional) Usenet groups and actually run our university (Undernet) IRC server…. Neither used HTML per se, yet on a bad day all were the same mess as any modern web forum.
