Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (TV)

So, we finally have some real Star Trek again:

May this homage to past heroes be some hope for a possible great future to come…

Nothing real about that. Still in the 'uncanny valley' realm of simulation. But getting scarily better.

I pity the acting profession going forward.

The only recent science fiction worth paying attention to has been Three Body, the Chinese production.

Lots of trendy science, but many things worth pondering.

I'm so much not into this one. Star Trek NG had one thing this one is missing, people felt like they were very civilised, a vision of the future i don't feel here.

You know the difference between real humans acting on a physical set, being filmed by real cameras.

Versus the thing you posted up there, which is none of those things.

That's the 'standard' being applied.

You do see acting credits of William Shatner, don’t you? And his younger self is played by another actor. There may not have been much of a set, but for sure there were real cameras.

My standard expanded more towards the rest. Aliens, spaceships and universes were also never real ;) People also wore makeup. That didn’t make them less of an actor.

What was done here is just a much more advanced version of “makeup”. This is not just 3D animated stuff. The basis for this is still the humans acting. The emotions you see are real, even if synthesized.

The question is, and you certainly have a point there, is for how long that will still be? The lines will blur even further, and eventually AI will replace actors. First the extras, and the mains will follow shortly.

Next thing we know the AI actors are embarrassing themselves on X, just like the real thing ;)

So it's 'real' in the sense an animated cartoon is 'real'..
But unlike a typical animated film, there's such an effort to simulate 'real' in things like this, that they only highlight their weird artificialness.
Though I'm sure the technology will improve beyond that.

tl;dr : If I want to watch a Robert Zemeckis version of ST, I'd watch these. But I probably don't and won't.

I remember the very first episode in the 60s where Spock was laughing. The next episode with William Shatner as Kirk, Spock became the straight-faced
never smile person he became. Black and White if I remember. Yes, Star Trek has changed a bit, BUT I'm still a devout Trekkie.
I was never a fan of "Andromeda" or "Final Conflict" directed by Majel Barrett. Final Conflict was like watching Paint Dry, and Andromeda used a couple
of pretty much washed-up actors looking for a paycheck. I never could sit and watch either one without getting up and doing just about anything but
watching the series.

ST was broadcast in color from the start.

The first broadcast episode was 'The Man Trap', the one with the salt vampire, and IIRC Spock doesn't laugh in that one.

It was not the first one filmed. That would be the pilot episode 'The Cage' (shown on ST, in color, as the two-parter 'The Menagerie'), where some characters are indeed different than what they became later. Spock smiles in that one.

Sure, it’s really hard to leave the uncanny valley :)

It will, and it has. Time and time again, we see that kids behind their desks are better at (re)creating human faces using AI than the large studios ;) But it’s something different to do this for a 10 second clip than for a full movie, so often a more traditional or hybrid approach is used. So give it some more time, and it will be (even more near) flawless.

FWIW I had recent occasion to rewatch a bit of one of Peter Jackson's Hobbit movies, and the CGI we thought was cool then looks often laughable now.

Which reminds me, some of the 'updated' CGI on ST:TOS is also cringe. It needs to be revisited.

Well, it's been a while, I stand corrected, maybe I mixed it up with another series. Lost in Space or something. Still, I always liked the series, with the
exception of Andromeda and Final Conflict. I'm not sold on Picard either. I need to watch it again. It didn't hold my interest like SNW or Discovery did.
I just rewatched Discovery. I honestly think DS9 was my favorite and Voyager was good once I got used to the Lady Captain.
I'm a bit of a pig, but at least I admit it. I tried working for/with a lady one time, LOL, water, and oil from day one.

Star Trek - Strange New Worlds, S3-E4 "A Space Adventure Hour"
Well I really hoped they learned their lesson about gettin all weirdo with the writing and the first 3 episodes of season 3 weren't too bad.
But here we were at E4 and once again the wheels have fallen off, and we got some type of fantasy-comedy that IMHO is just junk. Why can't they
find someone to just write good Sci-Fi ??? Thank God Gene Roddenberry isn't around to see the circus they've made of his brain child.

It is a shame that shows like TNG or DS9 will never happen again...Not just because nobody would have the balls to make something like that, but modern audiences don't have the patience.

The irony is that TNG, even today, will make them more money than all this modern Drek combined.
