No, Really! This photo is from January 24, 2024, during the annual surf-event, on the south-side of the pier.
Wait, if thats the south side of the pier then where's the pier. (West Coast Pacific assumed)

Wellll... Locally, it is called the "south side". Google maps shows what I mean:
Those two blue-shaded areas were behind me.
A dozen years ago, we used to have a LifeGuard tower every street on the BalboaPeninsula, they have been whittled down to every 5 streets, w/few supplemental lifeguard boats and ATVs patrolling to/from.
"Junior Lifeguards" is a big money machine here in SoCal but also gives kids some purpose in the summertime.
That atrocity is what they are building right on the beach and appears to look like a fortress and purposed "just for Jr. lifeguards
