Don't forget that Venus and Mars are in the habitable zone as well, and both have atmospheres. They do not know the composition of that exoplanet's atmosphere - it is possible that it is full of greenhouse gases like Venus and it may well be uninhabitable.

We just need warp drive and we will be good!

Considering the amount of traffic we have coming here from the rest of the (insert some number of billions if not trillions) habitable planets, I'd guess it may be a while.

Proxima Centauri is the little red star in the little red circle.

I can't quite see the welcome sign from here.

I didn't want to start a new thread, so to remain in this one, with the 'space' subject, other planets, other lifeforce, possible new places to live in the universe...

Stephen Hawking: If aliens call, we should be 'wary of answering'

Say, that we receive a stereo invitation from another race from another planet from another galaxy; we should be careful before answering their invite.
We shouldn't jump too fast @ building expensive vessels that would permit us to visit them.
I think it would be preferable that we take care of our people and children first; we can better use those $billions @ feeding the poor and building bridges of peace between our own continents.
Just what I truly think regarding wealth and communication service management for the health of our own human race and of our own planet...first and foremost.
______

Anyway, Stephen Hawking has a point here, and that short article is ... fascinating.

Hi

There is a superb book on the subject by a very famous (In China) Sci-Fi writer, Cixin Liu. A very different take on Sci-Fi.
The Three-Body Problem (Remembrance of Earth's Past) Kindle Edition

As for building expensive vessels with which we explore, that is part of what we do and have done throughout our history... perhaps some of the solutions are to be found elsewhere :)

Asteroid mining comes to mind. Could transform our world view .. An economy of abundance and not the current one based on scarcity ...

If we can find another habitable planet, we can send industrialized colonies to build factories there, and with the revenues we can spend it here on Earth.
Eventually we can clear/clean our air here and have control on global warming. We can replant our forests.

The other planet would be mainly for the lower class of workers, and criminals too. And by cleaning the Earth it would become more pleasant, no more pollution, less dense populations concentrated in cities...but expanding to the forests, jungles, mountains, and even building underwater villages, and above oceans too...like in Dubai. We can make forests of our deserts.

Only the hard workers would be living on the other planet, contributing to fill up the bank accounts of the rich people on Earth.
For compensation they would be well fed, have OLED giant TV screens, free movie and TV channels, see the parties that they have on Earth.
Light would be controlled too, longer daylight for more efficient work, and shorter nighttime mainly for sleeping and TV watching.

On Earth we would remain with our regular nighttime, but with more dancing/music parties. During daytime, the usual stuff; canoeing, golf, baseball, basketball, football, barbecues, sailing and music auditioning for the best parties when comes nighttime.
And no more noise, bad music and no shanty towns and favelas, but clean running toilets for everyone. And everything recycled in goods, compos for the gardens of other planets. All the garbage that cannot be recycled inside a black hole, like plastic oiled based products, kid's tows with chemicals in them, etc.

With our ever expanding world's population, and the dying one too (from air pollution, diseases, famines, etc.), we would eventually change the course of the future, for a better one. So other habitable planets is good for expansion and for the environment and world's population control. ...And with better laws too and better living conditions, and better stereo equipment.

If it reads like humor it's because it is...with a very slight underlining grain of reality. We're all free to use our own imagination...other habitable planets and various/better use for our own planet. Brief a better balanced universe.

The average human exhales about 2.3 pounds of carbon dioxide on an average day.
The exact quantity depends on your activity level—a person engaged in vigorous exercise
produces up to eight times as much CO2 as his sedentary brethren.

I wonder what happened in the Pleistocene to limit the maximums?

Ray, billion years ago, millions, thousands...they did not have thermometers, and the planet Earth was different than what it is today, with the chimneys, mufflers, cigarette lighters, plastics, rubbers (condominiums), purses, shoes, walmarts, OLED TVs, forest fires, air quality, oil, gas, smoke, fog, frogs, bees, ants, North Cholera, stock markets, NASDAQ, ISIS, car factories, nuclear plants, radio waves, radio activity, SIRIUS, micro wave ovens, texting, GPS navigation systems, robots, water quality, food quality, pesticides, chemicals, India, China, Africa, Venezuela, America, soccer, boxing, banks, money, health benefits, pensions, taxes, ...

The chain reaction of time with space and human's expenditures and expansions and consumptions plus the effected natural elements, the reproduction system, the biological and ecological equations, the surpopulation, the education system, the news, the governors, the kings and queens, the matrimonial families, the hierarchy, the dignitaries, the protectors of invaders, the alien explorers, the congestions, the infections, the lineups, the constructions, the repairs, the building's coverings, the padding, the paneling, the spreading, the jamming, ... is not the same today than yesterday...the winds are shifting, the oceans are wet with more debris, the space is a garbage dump, we are taking more pills, all type of pills, we have more deaths, more accidents, more police patrols, more corruption, more hospitals, more fixing people, more plumbers, more carpenters, more stock brokers, more judges, more prisoners, more tampons, more absorbing materials, more foams, more famines, more children dying every day, more contaminated water, more guns, more control by guns, more control by the people with guns, more bullets, more powder, more explosions, more vibrations, more reactions and more interpretations.

Today we have more graphs to help us feel secure. It's a natural human instinct; a picture with curves is satisfying for the brain.
Words don't have any effect, tones do. There are no tones in books, it's all interpreted. But speeches have tones...vocal tones, like when Bob Dylan speak.

One billion years from now I have zero idea of where we'll all be...which planet and which race.
The smartest people think we live in a world of lies, deceptions, power, greed, corruption and fake news, including the universe's dimension and global warming.
The people who designed the planet with graphs and puzzles think we have few more hundred years left in us.
The people above us, we did not meet them yet; and the ones who did keep it to themselves.
When an alarm rings people get out of the building, when there's no alarm we stay.
How long are we going to stay without any alarm?
