It's things like the wifi and issues with streaming easily that make me hesitant about the SHD. Many of you seem quite knowledgeable about networks and trouble shooting issues like this. I can follow directions, but this is not my Forte. Problem is, there aren't really any other options that provide what the SHD does for the price. Seems like the NAD C568 has its own set of issues. With a staunch return policy for minidsp, that also is a concern.
Although the initial setup is a bit of a learning curve it is totally worth taking the time and working with the SHD. It is a phenomenal piece of gear that has completely changed my understanding of hifi. I am not kidding. It is well worth the effort.
It took me a bit to get the wifi connected initially and then it was patchy at best. As soon as I got the wifi extender it solved the problem. The extender itself was super easy to setup, just power it on and hold a button, it connects to the wifi and your away. Then just plug the LAN cable into it and into the SHD. Immediate and stable connection. The SHD spotify connect app is really good. Once installed (which takes a while - so just let it keep working, I thought mine had stalled but it was just installing very slowly) it is great and I would not bother with the other spotify app (the onboard one). The spotify connect one is rock solid.
I can't comment on roon as I don't use it yet. The volumio streaming board is very slow and low powered though and it could not cope with my large SSD drive of music. If you have a networked music folder it will work fine, but no good for plugging in a large library of music. I instead just use my rpi I built earlier with Moode which is much faster and can cope with a really large library. I guess all of this will be largely dependent on your specific use case. How are you planning on using the streaming side of things?
