Minidsp Flex. Who has it?

It's your choice. I would use the WiiM for volume control, using the remote control that comes with it. (EDIT: or use the volume knob on the WiiM, or use the WiiM app volume control). In that case you can set the Flex to a set volume. E.g., leave it at 0dB, -5dB, or whatever you prefer.

But, if instead you want to use the Flex for volume control, you can do that with its remote control. In that case, just disable the WiiM volume control using the WiiM app on your mobile phone or tablet.

MiniDSP options for stereo analog output, including Dirac Live and a measurement microphone:

1. miniDSP DDRC-24. It costs $449 and includes a measurement microphone and Dirac Live:

WiiM (analog out) --> DDRC-24 --> amplifier/subwoofers

But, with digital sources you are going D/A with the WiiM, then A/D and D/A again with the DDRC-24. Each D/A conversion introduces noise and distortion. It looks to be based on the 2x4 HD, for which Amir stated in his review "the miniDSP 2x4HD has OK performance" and "you would be compromising some performance to gain the benefits of its equalization."

2. miniDSP Flex. It costs $769 after you add Dirac Live and a measurement microphone:

Wiim (digital out) --> Flex --> amplifier/subwoofers

That way, there is only one D/A conversion for your digital sources in comparison to the DDRC-24. In his review Amir stated "What a nice combination of functionality, usability and performance! As with many DAC companies, it is clearly Minidsp has put strong focus on chasing away sources of noise and distortion."

3. miniDSP SHD. It costs $1,299 and includes a streamer, a measurement microphone and Dirac Live:

SHD --> amplifier/subwoofers

The SHD is miniDSP's flagship stereo DSP unit. It includes a streamer, which I found to work well for my needs.
It has an analog input, but not a phono stage. So, you would need to use a turntable that has an integrated phono stage, or add a phono stage between the turntable and the SHD analog input.

EDIT: I just remembered that you have two analog sources, your turntable and your tuner. You would need to add an A/D converter for one of those, e.g., https://www.minidsp.com/products/us...zi-Q9sk3KJiZ_Mo-FDtNyThSKqJTWkKCCH0LLQX9p9pKp
Or, you could use a phono stage with a digital out.

In his review Amir stated "With distortion and noise at or below threshold of human hearing, the Minidsp provides competitive performance to some of the best desktop and high-fi DACs yet provides a ton of extra functionality they do not".

Yes, except you would not even need a WiiM if you went with the miniDSP SHD. See above.
for your solution #2 how would you do volume control since Wiim sends digital signal to the miniDSP unit. Also my turntable needs to connect to ADC before getting to the Wiim Ultra right?

Digital volume control on the wiim. Or leave it at full output and do digital VC on the Flex.

Wiim ultra operates as a phono stage. No ADC needed inbetween

I concur with what Jombob54 said. He is absolutely correct.

Regarding the turntable, the WiiM Ultra has a phono input with a built-in ADC and phono stage.

Use "IN" toward the left-top for your tuner, use "PHONO" for your turntable, and use the Optical (TosLink) "IN" for your CD player. If you want to connect a TV, connect it to "HDMI ARC".

Output to the Flex via the "COAX OUT", Optical "OUT" or "USB". Your choice. The WiiM will digitally control the volume over any of them.

@alaios the Flex and Dirac Live have a learning curve. Given your questions, DSP is new to you. The Flex is powerful, but configuring it may seem overwhelming, especially at first.

I recommend starting with just the WiiM Ultra. Get an RCA splitter to connect it to both of your subwoofers using "SUB OUT". Connect RCA "OUT" to your amplifier. Learn how to configure your system with the WiiM. It has a lot of DSP, including room correction, built-in, and is easier to use. As I previously noted, the WiiM Ultra may do everything you need.

After learning the basics and getting comfortable with DSP, if you want to go further into DSP to fine tune your subwoofer integration, then consider adding the Flex.

where I can find more info about wiim ultra DSP capabilities? Is it possible to high pass my sub as they do not play too low?

The WiiM app is very intuitive. It guides you through syncing your subwoofer with your speakers, and it also guides you through room correction. If you want to add tuning beyond that, the EQ settings are straight forward.

Nonetheless, if you need more assistance than what the app provides, go to the WiiM forum, https://forum.wiimhome.com/, and search for "DSP" with any specific question you have. If you have a question, someone else may have already asked it. If you don't find the answer you need, then ask. Also, there probably are YouTube videos. I would check there too.

Is it possible to high pass my sub as they do not play too low?
In the EQ section, select "Parametric EQ" and enable it. Use a LS (lowshelf) filter. Enter the desired frequency, enter a negative gain (e.g., -12 dB) and enter a Q (e.g., 0.71). If -12 dB is not enough for you, use additional LS filters with the same settings.

what does it mean to digitally control the volume? Is it a digital signal that informs the next device on what type of output levels are needed?

The volume in the digital signal output is set to be the volume that is selected in the WiiM. Remember, the WiiM has digital signal processing (DSP). From my understanding (I'm not a DSP engineer), a DSP changes volume by mathematically multiplying the digital audio data using a scaling factor, which is determined by the volume setting.

My understanding is that a digital signal is 0s and 1s modulating for the frequencies of the music, is this modulation also including volume control information, like in percentages?

so this is the path I will take you are right. Thanks to you and everyone.
Now I need to look for a simple power amplifier for my main speakers

How do you think a digitally recorded song has soft and loud passages, or how the end of a song can be faded? See my post above. I was editing it while you were asking your last question.

I just made my life easy and got a Wiim Pro as a source that feeds into the MiniDSP Flex.
Right. Do I understand right that the minidsp can be also bought bit later? So I can start with wiim ultra to connect my turntable, my cd transport (digital out) and then plug it into a power amplifier.

Later on I can put between minidsp a minidsp and then the power amplifier. Is not that correct?

That's another rabbit hole to go down. :)

First, determine how much power you actually need: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PBFl_gYj_g6XYeHZHYhnBxNm-JjJD0FJFguxEhE_2d0/edit?usp=sharing

Then, pick your budget.

Amir, the founder of this forum, has reviewed many, many amplifiers with objective measurement data. I find his reviews very helpful when selecting equipment.
Nice excel. It seems that I do not need more than 2 watts actually. :O :O I wonder though how much room I need to leave the amplifier for dynamics

That's correct.

You may find that there is simply no need for a miniDSP, but you will have the option.

Correct. I'd definitely start with Wiim. The room correction may be good enough for you (us an UMIK microphone though).
