Our company purchased several of these 16 channel DACs to expand the capabilities&flexibility of IEM racks I build and tour with.
They're fairly inexpensive at ~333€ a piece (20€ per output channel!). The DAC was fed via Ultranet from my X32 which was connected to the PC via USB (48KHz).
The DAC can be used with a PC over USB "directly" with the DN4816U (200€), which can feed two of the output boxes for a total channel count of 32.
Maximum output level is 21dBu (8.7V).
THD vs Frequency:
THD+N: 85.6dB
Dynamic Range: 115dB
IMD:
Frequency Response: +0.2dB@20KHz
THD vs Frequency:
The rise in distortion towards HF and the increasing IMD lead me to do a CCIF test to look at that in more detail:
The outputs are remarkably clean in terms of noise and while the distortion stats are nothing to write home about, they'd be inaudible even in controlled listening environments (and dwarfed by loudspeaker distortion!), so this is essentially perfect in my eyes. The frequency response is nice and flat and I've got nothing to complain about. The device can alternatively be powered by phantom power over the Stage Connect XLR input, but sadly not by PoE (since neither AES50 nor Ultranet are AoIP protocols, this doesn't surprise me) to declutter your rack/setup. I don't know how this fares in terms of redundancy.
Together with the DN4816U and a 16ch input box, you basically have a 16 In, 16 Out USB audio interface for 900€, for those who might be interested in that and need higher output levels than consumer hifi DACs deliver.
Into the rack it goes..!
Cheers
