Well, the "incredible bass" and "modular and upgradable" are undeniable features.
As in many audio magazines and portals, it needs some reading between the lines (and thorough examining the measurements).

Yes, THD above 100% around 30Hz at 90dB is really "incredible" for a studio monitor

You should keep in mind this important quote from the same review:
"Note: Data approximate below 100 Hz"
Distortion measurement in this SOS review was done at farfield (prone to noise pollution, etc.), not in the nearfield - as it should be.

So, no - it is impossible for a 8" Purifi PPT8 woofer to have such high distortion! Look at these proper measurement for this woofer:

At SPL=95 dB (or 96 dB) distortion at 30 Hz is less than 10%.
