Interesting new studio speaker design from present day production

Perhaps just needed a bit more time spent in development.

I took some Manger actives to Phil he was pretty honest about those, much to the displeasure of the manufacturer.

Quote from SOS review:

Pros

  • Incredible bass.
  • Fantastically revealing.
  • Brilliant stereo imaging.
  • Modular and upgradable
Well, the "incredible bass" and "modular and upgradable" are undeniable features.
As in many audio magazines and portals, it needs some reading between the lines (and thorough examining the measurements).

Yes, THD above 100% around 30Hz at 90dB is really "incredible" for a studio monitor

???
You should keep in mind this important quote from the same review:
"Note: Data approximate below 100 Hz"
Distortion measurement in this SOS review was done at farfield (prone to noise pollution, etc.), not in the nearfield - as it should be.

So, no - it is impossible for a 8" Purifi PPT8 woofer to have such high distortion! Look at these proper measurement for this woofer:

https://www.erinsaudiocorner.com/driveunits/purifi_ptt80x04-nab-02/

At SPL=95 dB (or 96 dB) distortion at 30 Hz is less than 10%.

On axis and +- 20 degrees vertical measurements.

So, some interesting tidbits from their discord:

1. The Bliesma 3" mid is totally comfortable crossing at 400hz, which very few dome mids can do (as it stands, I think that's ATC and Bliesma silk).
2. They've got an option (which costs truckloads more) to use a Purifi woofer and port the cabinet. This allows for a huge increase (they're saying ~25dB in the low end) in SPL.
3. They really didn't love the simulations lol.
1. Volt’s 2” and 3” also work swell in that area.
2. They use that option.
3. No they talk alot about making them and provide measurements………

I've certainly seen worse. Not amazing though.
the Y axis on FR measurement is specifically made to make it look better, when you scale it to usual 50dB it looks as bad as it gets for a studio monitor. There's almost 14dB swing between 3,5kHz and 4,9kHz, no studio monitor should be +-7dB in the midrange

I've got the Bliesma M74B + T25B in my current setup and love them. Along with the Purifi woofers, these are all really high performance drivers. The custom hypex amp pack looks good, and if they're using the hypex dsp module, then they have great ingredients for building an awesome set of speakers. Of course, just stuffing a bunch of high end stuff into a box isn't going to guarantee a good end result... I'm seeing 3 big red flags:

1) If they're really crossing the M74B at 400hz and think that's OK, that really makes me question if they know what they're doing.
2) That FR is pretty terrible. This is an active system with FIR available. Even with an inexpensive measurement setup, you don't need more to do a really good job on the crossover. The midrange and treble ought to be very flat, given this setup.
3) The $5k price is way, way too low. The only way to pull that off is to do a crap job on the cabinet construction and just slap a box together. There's no other way around these margins,

Having said that, if you gain access to the dsp module and can reprogram the crossover, the $5k price is a steal for what you get here. Might need to rebuild the box though...
