With the volume control set to "0dB," a 1kHz digital signal at 0dBFS resulted in an output level of 4.36V from the balanced outputs, 2.18V...

State of the art for £1800, but of course state of the art streaming is available for a great deal less, the A-8 is an almost perfect 21st Century preamp.

2.2 output is missing. If this had proper capability to have HPF and LPF separated outputs, it'd have been close to perfect. Considering all you can do with this in the realms of filtering and PEQ etc, it's a really weird omission to not have that key functionality across the outputs.

What do you think it would need to make it “perfect” ?
Just curious , as I have one and the only thing I think it needs is to be HDMI CEC compliant and auto input-switching between inputs .

I suppose adding RIAA equalisation, but that would be useful for only a small percentage of users, the A-8 does everything I need.

didn't seem to get answered the question about the XLR's for HT bypass? I would like to connect the A8 directly to my Michi M8's & also the AVM70. Will this be possible & then use the A8 for stereo duties & streaming music from eg Amazon?

There is no "bypass" function.

The RCA and XLR output the same signal, and you can select which to output. The HDMI on the A6 is output only. The A8 has no HDMI, it does have IIS.

But, the A6 / A8 can act as a preamp which is what I assume you want to do since you are connecting it directly to your amps.

And you can can set default startup volumes, however playing around with it today by input it doesn't seem they 'stick' by input (they apply to all analog outputs).

So basically, you could input via a digital input or on the A8 analog, and then you'd need to adjust the volume to the ideal volume for use in HT mode each time.
