Does listing equipment help anything?

/\Electric Light Orchestra meet REO Speedwagon\/
Oops, I've seen ELO and that is what I was referencing, a slipup on my part. REO Speed Wagon is still on my "haven't listened to if I ever did" list. I'm
sure I would recognize something of theirs but they aren't on any playlist of mine. If I remember the concert I heard ELO was at Winterland in the
mid to late 70s if not it was the Cow Palace. I remember Tangerine Dream at Winterland and Queen shortly before or after. I remember Winterland
was always to LOUD, no matter who played there. I saw the "Tubes" there and considering how loud that place usually was they made for a great
show. They actually turned it down enough to enjoy the show with just a tad of toilet paper vs standing in corridors and your ears bleeding.

Nothing can ruin a concert quicker than a bunch of drunks on a stage thinking it's all good. Reference; "Journey" and "Deep Purple."
I remember the rush to LEAVE the joint when 1/2 the people walked out because of noise. That was the worst concert of all time.
The real bummer was I liked both band on an LP/RtR/8 track.

Regards

"What are you gonna do with that? Are you going to run to your basement, get that exact same equipment from your infinite selection, set it up, play the album and see if you agree? Obviously not; people are gonna judge the opinion based on whatever little or lot know about that gear. They are gonna make judgements based on other reviews and most of all price. And on top of that, why not be consistent and require people to fill room dimensions, distributions, materials... maybe even a curve?"
Bullseye! I congratulate you Sir on your schrewd remarks.

I would add another point regarding listening equipment: Pure unadulterated fetishism on the behalf of “trendsetters” (industry people?), uncritically divined by the (c)hords of followers.

P.S. Consider ourselves lucky that (at least to my knowledge) no one had yet posted here a detailed medical report from their hearing specialist!

Nonproductive arguments ignoring physical reality and the tricks our ear/brain system plays on us. If there's a problem, measurements will show it, but those measurements often difficult to perform, for speakers would require being in the listener's home, require gear and equipment most common audiophiles do not posses, experience in reading and correlating those measurements, and above all a willingness to believe in the results. All of which can easily be obviated by the usual subjective aspersions and disbelief. Waste of time and effort.
I put in bold some seriously good nuggets of wisdom. I wish I had posted before you did! But, you beat me to it by a country mile. So, I give you a "Good Job" and a pat on the back. :)

What is nice here on ASR is the courtesy of the members and founders.
The topics discussed all tend towards the maximum possible objectivity, based on numbers and not words.
The site you are talking about is entirely subjective with a section on musical tastes  and sales of audio-video devices going only in the direction of the more expensive = the better:D*.
Here we are looking for proof. I am still searching.
Obviously, past a minimum low-end level, something other than the sound quality or the image of the BR player will play a role: prettier, bigger, known brand etc.

* having dared to question this impossible paradigm, I was fired on the spot years ago: hallelujah!

I believe that's would be the thing they avoid the most! :D Or it might be amusing how they would rationalize having not so great hearing! :D

Yeah, checking others audio gear puts me in my place as being still just a wanna-be "golden ear" authority on sound.

Unless it's complete trash, discernment in listening and evaluating audio is not about the gear.

Nor does expensive or "good" gear mean the owner is a good listener.

From the measurements of gear around here, it's clear that obtaining great sound doesn't need to cost a fortune.

The converse is also true - spending a fortune on gear doesn't guarantee great sound.
