I look at it as matching. Start with the room, it's size and volume the distances away from the speakers for concentrated or casual/background listening in adjacent spaces. Where will the speakers be placed, on the floor, shelf, media bench as part of a home theater arrangement with a subwoofer. If its music only system then addition of DSP will be make everything sound much better and in HT DSP usually comes in an AVR. How far speakers are from the wall is important as to how much bass you get and anything rated 40-50 hz and above will require a sub for full range enjoyment. Don't forget the passive vs active in speakers, some will say integrated is better as the design is balanced and others will say passive lets you add features and power. I generally agree with others the electronics are a solved issue but there are still losers out there so diligence in those decisions is important also. Clutter, equipment count, storage, connections/wiring and partner acceptance are important factors, so integrated electronics can save space, money and make less detective work in balancing everything. Once the big picture is at its first iteration then the hunt can begin. I will say the right speakers for room size and system intent is the place focus energy and funds.
