Skip studio monitors all together and get an Aiwa Exos9 for $300. Don't bother with a set of studio monitors with four cables, plus a source and power cable. Accuracy is nice, but in your garage situation I'd rather have my Exos9 than a pair of studio monitors.
Heck, even a Sonos speaker I think I'd like better, because of their adaptive volume EQ: They keep the bass high when you turn them down low so they don't sound thin at lower levels. Then they flatten out as you increase the volume. (This more closely follows the fletcher munson equal loudness curves that people hear.)
