Yes and no. The old heritage lines that are 1960's designs can be at times pretty bad. The newer stuff is pretty good. Plus it depends on what your set up capabilities are such as Eq etc.

And for this budget, especially nowadays, what an entire system you can buy or make!
For example, my PC motherboards never cost over $150, and most were in the sub $100 range. There's tremendous savings everywhere as long as you don't fall into paying idiot and consumerist taxes.
