A FiiO S15 overview "review"

I'm keen to hear how this compares to the Eversolo range regarding sound quality. I have an RME ADI2 FS DAC that I'd like to replace/upgrade with a streamer, but I need to be sure I'm not taking a backward step in terms of sound quality.

Eversolo A6 just got an upgraded to gen 2 with HDMI too

You will likely be taking a step back from the rme when it comes to post-sales support from what I gather.

The PEQ for S15 also doesn't work for digital outs if that matters. It's only for analog outs.

Yes but that's hdmi IN to the FIIO S15. I'm talking about hdmi OUT of the S15. So that what's playing on the S15 can be broadcasted to a tv with a normal viewing ratio. It appears the HDMI OUT is really only for ARC, to connect to a TV so that a TV stream's audio can be passed IN to the S15

As I mentioned, it passes video through. In my setup, it's connected this way:
Shield TV HDMI out --> Fiio S15 HDMI in --> Fiio S15 HDMI out to screen + RCA out to Emotiva preamp

My Shield TV Pro is not connected to the display. It passes entirely through the S15.

So Video is passed through and respective audio will be decoded by Fiio and passed to your amp?

Yes, I just saw that today. It will be interesting to see what that's like. To be fair, the form factor of the A6 would be better for my desk.

Yes, support is always a concern.

I only need the balanced analogue out into my near field monitors.

Thank you for clarifying this. I didn’t realize that’s how you have it set up. That’s very interesting! I don’t think I have a use for this feature but that’s good to know. Any chance there is a video app on the streamer that comes pre installed? Similar to a music app but for videos

No, there is no official Fiio video player app. You'll have to download one from the Play Store. But that would likely mean it would show up as a tiny window on the external display during playback.

If you intend to use the S15 for videos, you'd really have to connect an external device via HDMI to get a good experience.

Thank you, I appreciate the info. How have you been enjoying it the streamer? Does the open android system work well on it?

As an audio streamer, I'm really happy with it. It sounds really good to my ears and works well with my usual music apps like Apple Music, Spotify and Emby for the music stored on my NAS.

The HDMI in and out is also quite useful for me since I can use the Shield TV Pro for watching videos occasionally and gives me the option of using Emby for music with a bigger display to show what's playing.

The interface is not quite as polished as Eversolo's but it's not that bad.

I've been looking for a network streamer that supports SiriusXM. I don't see a reason why this player couldn't operate it if you can download the siriusm app for it. But I guess the view of the app will be weird because of the size of the screen?

The Shield TV doesn't do bit-perfect audio output via USB; only via HDMI. So the Fiio S15 was actually perfect for this use-case.
I don't think this is accurate. The Shield Pro has a USB output for bit perfect audio. I use it with my Harmony Laiv DAC and/or Hifi Rose 150B with success. I have been waiting for a device that streams hi-res audio but also allows me to watch videos and streaming services. I use the Shield to watch Youtube and various video streaming services. I switch to the Rose 150B for Qobuz and their native Rosetube. I use Noble Onyx IEMS and a high end audiophile level headphone amp so the differences are easily discerned. I want to move the Rose to the family room and am interested in another device for the bedroom setup. Preferably with video output so I can see whats playing, etc. Like the Hifi Rose. The Rose has limitations as it does not have the Play Store. Limited app support, plus $$$

I've tested the USB audio output of the Shield and it doesn't do bit-perfect natively, only with specific apps. IIRC, 44.1 gets resampled to 48 and anything above that gets resampled to 192.

The Fiio's on Line Out mode. All volume is controlled on my Emotiva preamp.

This an unrelated question to the fiio. How do you get bit perfect from the shield tv? I have only seen 48hz come out of my pro.

This has to be active under Advanced sound settings:

My setting look different. Do you have the latest firmware? One of the recent ones changed the USB setting name from high quality stereo to something like hi-res, can't remember exactly. I'll post when I get home. Also, there is a USB setting elsewhere that needs to be set to max performance for hi-res USB, this is important I believe. I had emails with their tech support regarding hi-res USB. I am aware only certain apps passing 192/24bit. What apps do you use that are bit perfect? I can put my Bryston DAC in the bedroom. It has HDMI input and output! I can hook the Shield to it and compare the HDMI to USB and monitor the bit depth and sample rate. Please let me know what apps you have that pass bit perfect :)

Apple Music (side-loaded) is bit-perfect on HDMI. So is Emby, Plex, VLC when I use them to play back my standard and hi-res FLAC files.

Learnt from their support that it has

HDMI 2.0, so no 4k 120Hz passthrough.
No eARC
No HDMI-CEC

Has PEQ
Has AES/EBU out
Decent/diverse Bluetooth codec support

Not sure about if apple music can run natively off it's custom android 12 OS. I think eversolo might be the only one that has it working? I do read people saying some APKs work and some other versions don't. Shoddy support I guess.
what is a streamer without these compromises but still has hdmi outs like s15 ?

I was a bit disappointed about the lack of HDMI CEC. Having it attached to a TV in the living room needs that as a must unless people are ok with yet another remote.
