DLNA and Streamer Screen Info

I have fallen in love with the Fiio S15 streamer but it (like many streamers) doesnt support squeezelite so cant stream to it natively from LMS.

Now LMS can stream via DLNA and from what I can read while DLNA is a dead protocol it seems stable enough via LMS.. if not then its back to using squeezelite->USB.

My question (and it's not a deal breaker) is if you stream via DLNA does/can a streamer with a screen (generically ***) display info like album art, album/track info etc or is it limited to basic stuff like bit rate/depth.

Note all my FLAC tracks are tagged and have embedded album art

Thanks,

Peter

**** Cant seem to find a manual for it which might supply an answer to my question.

That's really a question for FiiO - I think their display is their design, and what it displays is what they decide to give you.
Do DLNA streams contain album art in their metadata? Yes, definitely. When I stream via DLNA to my AudioPro C5, BubbleUPnP on my Android tablet shows me the source file type (FLAC), the sample rate, and cover art. I should point out that my cover art is not embedded, it's a separate jpeg file in each album-directory called "folder.jpg"

You could ask on the FiiO forum -
https://forum.fiio.com/
but why not just go ahead and try it?
If you have not used the DLNA plugin before I can tell it it's called "UpNP/DLNA Bridge"
Initially I encountered server errors with this plugin, until under the settings for this plugin I changed "Select Binary" to "squeeze2upnp-macos-static" for Mac, or for Windows "squeeze2upnp-static.exe"

These Web pages say Fiio's S15 (and R7) support DLNA.

So it seems you could use Minimserver as the streamer software. It is a nearly-free program that runs on Windows and on Linux boxes. It pairs well with BubbleUPnP (also nearly free, runs on Android devices). They are quite capable of organizing and searching libraries by tags, and they display the information you want.

It appears to me that @fatoldgit is already aware that the FiiO supports DLNA, but is not interested in using a DLNA server or control interface, and instead wishes to stick with an LMS server and LMS control interface.
@fatoldgit you can correct me if I'm wrong.

You are indeed a wise person with excellent comprehension skills.

Not only that, but like myself, you are a Linux Lover so you are my kinda person!!!

Few streamers*** support squeezelite natively so DLNA is the next cab off the rank when it comes to streaming from LMS so as the original question asked: For those who use DLNA as a streaming protocol into a streamer with a fancy screen, do you get album art, artist and track info and if not, what do you get.

I know from reading the DLNA spec that it does support this but as to whether streamers generally implement this is another question (and obviously LMS plays a part as well)

I have asked Fiio this question before Xmas but I guess as we are in the holiday season I might not get a prompt reply.

But as noted, if I only get basic info, it's not a deal breaker... just wanted to see what others gets.

*** My peculiar "issues" are in general, a component needs to be full width (cause it will be inplace with other full width components in a non-desktop environment) and the component needs to have symmetry. I just cant stand say a screen to the left and knob to the right. And needs to have a silver face plate. Hence my hardon for the Fiio. They are a good company, with excellent products and associated software and this device ticks the full width/symmetry needs (plus all the tech features I need)

So yeah the Wiims support squeezelite but hit a hard fail (for me) on full width/symmetry

Yeah but the displaying of coverart etc in your case probably isnt down to DLNA but just a "local to BubbleUPnP on the tablet" presentation.

I dont have any existing DLNA capable devices (and certainly none with a big display) so cant do an end to end test without spending any money.

As noted, a lack of cover art etc doesnt really matter as the Fiio S15 ticks all other boxes.

Since the DLNA server software Minimserver offers extensive tag choices, and since "If the server, player and control point are all built according to the UPnP/DLNA standards, they work together even though they may be produced by different companies" (minimserver documentation), this statement is almost surely not the case.

its been a long time since I have my streamer working properly (long story). But some years back I had Minimserver and BubbleUPnP running on my Synology and I used Lumin on my table to control everything. Worked pretty well. I have an ethernet connnection in my DAC and I wasn't using any apps from the DAC's company. I gave up on LMS long before that as it was a bit too limiting in terms of devices it worked with nowadays.
