About 20 years ago Andy Kershaw played a track on his Radio 3 programme from an album called 'In the Heart of the Moon' by Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté, both from Mali. I already had some Ali Farka Touré but this was a new sound for me. Toumani played the kora, and the music was just gorgeous. Over the years I've collected all the Toumani Diabaté CDs I could find. Every so often I'd go through a phase when I'd start playing them again and wondered how I could ever listen to anything else. One of these phases was a few months ago and I thought that I really must see him perform if/when he next comes to the UK. I was in the process of recommending him to someone else when I discovered that he had died on 19 Jul. I'm so upset that there will be no more music from him. Anyway, if you're curious, I still recommend 'In the Heart of the Moon' as an "intro". He's recorded other collaborations but I much prefer his kora solo and duet albums. For me this is music like nothing else.

Focus 12's release got past me... the first LP I owned was Moving Waves and the band (and Jan Akkerman, of course) have been a constant for me.
