A really interesting video on the development of the Beolab 90 by Dr. Geoff Martin of B&O.

I guess the focus was on directivity control through beam forming... And then wrap that up in a super sexy design  .

Worth your time to watch.

Surprised there's so little interest in this video. It's actually quite indepth into the engineering that went into developing a flagship product. Lots of science and design consideration.

I certainly enjoyed it, it's rare to see the whole process even including the relation with the designer.
That they called « visual » designer, when it’s probably more an industrial designer (I’m picky but I was one).
I was surprised by few things:
- the limited number of prototypes, maybe they didn't show them all, or it could mean they really extracted the most of each before moving on.
- a 4 years process, that seems pretty long in this field no? Maybe because the target was not that clear.
- all the thinking and testing is impressive, but in a way it’s not that a crazy level, I mean you can see some diyer doing stuff that seems comparable to me.
But they sure brought it to a great level.

I found it fascinating that they pivoted - from a speaker with multiple "fronts" and a very wide dispersion to a speaker with selectable dispersion through beam forming. To be honest - the idea that their customer would have an environment where they would "move" their speaker is a bit absurd considering who their customer is likely to be - a very narrow use case - so perhaps it was no surprise that they dropped that idea.
