Silver Soldering Teach Me

Silver solder also has a tendency to creep over time, I don't know the proper term, so it will form burrs from the solder point and could short the component if it grows too long.

Those are called tin whiskers. A friend (an engineer) told me that NASA switched to silver solder and had some satellites fail because of this. They switched back to normal solder.

For health reasons, I would absolutely advise you against soldering with lead-containing solder. The fumes are poisonous and it is a really stupid idea to inhale something like that. Once there is damage, it is too late, unfortunately I know what I am talking about.

Here we go again...

Lead poisoning can be very dangerous, especially for kids in development. Its not to take lightly bcs it has serious effects on central nervous system. IQ loss, ADHD like symptoms and agression being notable. Keep this stuff away from your kids.

Maybe if your kid is eating solder, but if he is, you've got bigger problems. You are spreading misinformation linking 60/40 lead solder to ADHD and aggression.

What's next? Your kid can't go fishing because he touches lead sinkers? Ridiculous.

Lead poisoning from solder is a non-issue. It's been researched for a century or more. People need to understand the difference between a liquid state and a vapor state. You never breathe in lead or tin from soldering.

The rosin/flux core is made primarily of refined pine sap and produces all sorts of interesting compounds when it burns off. Not a good idea to breathe it in all the time- that's why air extractor/filters are used for people manually soldering all day.

What if he is eating the solder? Kids put all kinds of stuff in their mouth or up the nose so. Led is a toxic heavy metal in any state of phase or transition, or is there a contrary belief to that?

Lead isn’t toxic at all by skin exposure, and not very toxic when consumed. Long term exposure in salt forms when used as pipes for drinking water is the main issue.

But lead is such a convenient enemy, when mental health is concerned. And it makes us forget the much more pervasive culprits, like seeds oils, sugar and lack of iodine.

Don't eat, don't drink and you will stay healthy until starvation death. LOL. Of course it makes sense to prevent people without knowledge from all kind of hazards. But I feel some use this for a kind of believer war against others. In Germany many types of chemicals are not allowed to be sold to private persons. In my youth 50 or so years ago it was possible. Same for weapons and even pepper spray. Freedom was and still is taken away, also due to European regulations.

I beg for sincere and humble pardon if I stumbled into the "save the lead solder thread". I actually thought this was about silver soldering, but ive been known to make mistakes before so. Not my intention!

I stand by my very bastante suggestion: Dont give lead to kids! If people are worried about corn sugar, plastic softeners, methylphenidate, aluminum salted deodorants. Remember every other toxin IS NOT in competition to these and others. They actually come on top of these, and some toxins even work TOGETHER to make your body miserable. Go figure.

My personal view is that MOST metals in any form is somewhat toxic. With exeption for gold and some other edel-metals, which dont react to acids in palm sweat or wherever you would want to imply it. Of course humans and other beings need trace-metals for physical function. The most famous being iron for the haemoglobin in blood to pick up oxygen. These are only, like the word implies, just trace(amounts). You dont need to drive nails through your hands to be able to breath.

That said! As we speak, im waiting for a nice kg of lead solder shot in the mail to weigh down a recent building project. Lead isnt the best material for this. Gold has a lot higher density, but I found it too expensive. Tungsten is about the same density as gold, but it would be living hell to machine it to size. Uranium-238 aka DU is kind of hard to come by without having special forces raiding my bedroom at 3:13 in the morning.

Lead is everywhere in society. In roofing, batteries, old piping, fishing lures and whatnot. Thankfully they took it out of gasoline(not without protest) so we dont have to breath it when going to the store to buy a pack of cigarettes and a box of multivitamins.

My grandfather died at 70 from lungcancer. He worked alot of demolition, and at the time "Eternite" also known as asbestos was on the menu. Asbesto dust has the form of micro needles which penetrates the lungs and stay there for eternity. Pun intended! He also smoked ten to twenty Ritmeister cigarillos a day.

If you actually read through this post, and can spot a message. Good or bad for you I guess. Maybe this is why average lifespan has almost doubled in modern society. Because we marinate in toxins. I dont care because I feel these questions are somewhat big for me. Im gonna go have a cup of coffe now.

Have a nice day, and dont catch that hot lead comming at ya. That sure is poisinuous :D
