I'd try messaging over the "New Version" thread too. I don't know the answer to your question. I'm kind of expecting that this will be the sort of thing solderdude will know. I mean you might end up getting told that all serial numbers after roughly XXXXXX would be the New Version headphone for instance.
Well signs or wear or malfunction but generally I've never encountered receiving a refurbished one when ordering "new" from Sennheiser.
Hifiman is a completely different story though. I really wanted to get a Sundara "new" and half of my ordered 5 pairs were definitely returns repacked.
