Rotel RB-1090 Strange behavior with XLR/RCA connections

While those are XLR output connectors, they are not balanced outputs.
Isn't that what I said? I put the word 'balanced' in ticks and actually wrote "they're not balanced at all".

Or are you just confirming what I wrote?

If you had written:
The NAD1000 / 106 preamp has 'XLR' outputs but they're not balanced at all. So you could add this at 4 to your list...

Then I would have understood.
 
While those are XLR output connectors, they are not balanced outputs.
I think they are roughly impedance balanced (which is what really matters to obtain CMRR) : they are two resistors in series between the output of the active stage and pin 2 of the XLR (180+47 ohms = 227 ohms) and one 220 ohms resistor between the preamp internal 0V reference and pin 3 of the XLR.
