Hello everyone - I'm looking at add some power to my system (currently running a Rotel A11 Tribute to Revel M16s, 50 wpc), and I'm wondering what's the better option if I stick with Rotel. Which will have better sound quality (I stream Tidal --> Wiim Pro --> Schiit Modi & have a Fluance RT85 turntable):
  1. A11 Tribute as pre-amp --> Rotel RB-1582 MkII (200 wpc, ~$2400 CAD)
  2. Rotel RA-1592 MkII (200 wpc, ~$3600 CAD)
I really love the sound of the A11, but it needs some help at higher volume --> will I get the same sound from it's pre-outs? I'd love to save some $$$ and just get the power amp, but if it won't cut it as a pre-amp, I could save up for the RA-1592. Thank you for the help.

I have the A11 Tribute.
What about a D class power amp, lots to choose, cheaper than Rotels and measuring fine.

The M16 has a listed sensitivity of 86 dB. 50 watts represents 17 dBw, so 86+17=103 dB, measured at 1 meter .
What is your listening distance? At 3 meters, your SPL is a nominal 93 dB, which is quite loud.
If your amp "needs some help at higher volume", you might benefit from a subwoofer to take the load of low frequencies off the M16. ;)

Thanks - sub is a great idea. I’ve messed around with some Fosi class D stuff (v3 stereo and mono blocks) and came away unimpressed. The Hifi Rose RA280 looks cool, but dang that’s a big investment!

We don't typically listen in anechoic chambers though. As a rule of thumb, SPL per pair at 2.5-3 m ≈ SPL at 1 m anechoic. Specifics would depend on the room in question.

That would mean about 103 dB peak at listening position, about as much as recommended but not excessive by any means.

BTW, according to the M16 review, average sensitivity is more like 85 dB. A bit on the lowish side.

Good point. They're 10 dB down at 40 Hz (anechoic) anyway.

You have to be careful though, a bunch of them are IEC Class I. Watch out for ground loops.

In case of sticking with Rotel, the power amp seems like the better deal. It would require close to 2 Vrms if input for full power though, which the A11 (spec: 1 Vrms out) may or may not be able to provide. For much less than the $1200CAD difference one should easily be able to find a headphone/preamp to take up the slack though, a lot of the $100(US) usual suspects would do the business (Atom Amp 2, Magni, L30 II etc.).

BTW, right now 1 USD = 1.42 CAD.

And a waste of funds. The Fosi amps are cool and inexpensive but not on a NCore or Purifi level...

Hi John, what you finally end up with? I'm looking at 1592 MkII to drive an older pair of Celestion SL6si, which is also quite inefficient at 84dB

Im surprised you didn’t like the Fosi stuff. I liked the Fosi V3 more than my A11 tribute I had.
I have the A11 Tribute.

Have you used the A11 Tribute as a preamp into a class D? which Class D’s do you have?

Honestly, I doubt that the m16 can handle more than the power of the rotel A11.
It is a 6" 2-way.......................

Maybe turn the bass down and have a subwoofer hooked up to the preamp outputs........................

NO, I am happy with A11 driving Piega 3.0 Classics.
But I have an Aiyima 07 around.
Nice! Yeah I think my speakers where a little to warm(Wharfedale Linton) to really work well with the A11 tribute. I did like the A11 tribute. I thought it sounded really nice. Very pleasant tone. Just not the best match for my setup at the time. I had the CD11 Tribute too. I kept that component a lot longer than the amp. Great CD player too. Upgraded to the CD14 MKII.

My question was actually to the OP I had mixed you guys up when I quoted and replied.
