Does anyone own or tried the UMIK-X multichannel array mics in conjunction with REW?

Part 3 is almost said in the room EQ reviews I have been doing and to some extent the speaker reviews (listening test part). :)
I am really disappointed. You made such a nice two parts and promised the third one but...still nothing. Did you abandon it?
I am in process of learning of room acoustics, especially measuring but didn't find beter article than your one so I really miss Part 3.

Yes, it’s been abandoned. However once you get started with REW and learn what target curve you like, you already have all the tools you need. You’re just going to have to make a ton of errors before reaching the promised land.

Great two articles. Fingers crossed that part three sees the light of day, since that is where the data is collected and one can understand what is going on in one's room.

I currently have access to a Zoom h5 recorder. Would it be sufficient to capture measurements to improve the sound of an otherwise untreated setup?

In a word, no. The microphones are of unknown type and quality. You need omni capsules that are quite flat in the frequency range. The capsules on the pictured item are cardioid capsules with falling bass response. Even if you had omni capsules for it, they are likely unsuitable, but might be worth trying below 5KHz.

Thanks for your response. That's a shame but I'll see if I can find a more suitable mic in that case :)

Hello amirim and friends,

Just for your reference, I use measurement microphone BEHRINGER ECM8000 with CEntrance MicPort Pro USB (48V phantom PS capable on 5V USB) for REW measurements in my multichannel multi-driver multi-amplifier project. I think this combination would be one of the de facto standards for fundamental sound measurements.

The ECM8000 is variable like a lot of those mics (the UMIK-1 is the same). I have 2 of them and I had them characterised last year by a friend in a national testing lab - you can easily see the difference between 2 samples. I am only confident using these because I have had them measured. They are quite stable over time.

Hello PaulD,

Thank you for your kind follow-up.

Yes, I know the variation; for accurate precise measurement, therefore, we need to first calibrate individual ECM8000 (and other measurement microphones), and the calibration data file can be loaded into REW.

Very true. I bought my UMIK1 from a place called “cross spectrum” and they create an individual calibration file for every microphone using a very high quality system.

Yes, I probably should have pointed out that my graph goes +/- 3dB... So in the scheme of things these mics are perfectly suitable for EQing issues below about 5kHz, where most of the issues lie. People should not be put off by a circa 1-2dB variation in the lower range - room modes are MUCH worse than that!

Playing with EQ and getting a bit more chest and body to the gitar and voices. Less TZZ in cymbals. Moving Microphone Measurement

Dear kind @amirm !
I sincerely appreciate your time, and help when it comes to audio! I’ve read the 1st part, and second part in full.. some months ago in a post I thought you mentioned you started the 3rd installment of your way of doing things.

You made such a valid point.. “most videos and tutorials try and show you everything in one video, which is bad due to the fact things can fail, and you need to go back.. thus making it annoying and where folks give up”

You’ve primed us/me for the fact your way will be instrumental in the process, no pun intended! Lolol or did I?

lol, anyways.. I know your a busy man.. with so many things to do for us.. I simply thank you for!! Gosh wish I could help as you do!

Is there anyway maybe a few of us could maybe pay, or bribe you to finish your ingenious one of a kind method? I’m a happy supporter, and would be ecstatic to support more for this cause.

I ask of course for myself, but on behalf of many others here that simply enjoy, appreciate and understand your way of “telling us how it is” You do make things a lot more easy to understand!

So in parting... I deeply thank you for all the time spent showing us Hi-Fi..... Real Hi-Fi!!
Sincerely
Shivers

PS, I think I want some Asian pears now!

I’m going to try and dive into my subwoofer today and running REW for placement. Going to use the part 1 and part 2...

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a part 3 to read? Or another video/walk through you used to help you? Thanks much!
