RME DPS-2 Linear Power Supply

I appreciate your sense of humor! My wife is happy too, besides all my big boy toys :).
Another one ($$$$) is on the way, and its measurements and listening will be published here. See my posts.

My wife isn't complaining either. One of my talents is eating out professionally. Korean BBQ anyone??

Invite your wife for a nice dinner instead!
Well, as previous a nice evening certainly can be in life, from a purely economical point of view, one could start to philosophize whether this isn't an even bigger waste of money compared to the power adapter* in relation, given the often terrible value for money when eating outside, and you guys in America even have the tipping shit on top, nowadays driven to ridiculous levels where it's soon expected to be given for the card terminal alone just doing its one job.

* which at least you can sell again and preserve at least some amount

Ehhh .... life is short. I'm at a point where I've worked hard, and I'm almost done paying for professional school. I hate traveling, so for me it's about enjoying myself at home/work. And nothing is better for me than great food, great drink shared with friends and family. YMMV of course :)

Kinda can't wait for my DPS-2 to arrive. If nothing else, to prove that there is no audible sonic difference with and without it plugged in :p

Certrainly a honourable point of invest. No question.

But if they committed themselves to lowering prices of their interfaces instead of making these apparently useless kind of products, would they not earn more consumer markets?
They are not targeting consumer markets. And what exactly are you suggesting them to do? Relocate manufacturing to China and start making short-lived products with off-the-shelf components?

Seems a bit like getting chrome headers for your hot rod. Won’t go any faster but if you enjoy seeing them, and you can afford them, why not? I for one really dislike the wall wart and other separate cheesy supplies. That said this seems crazy expensive for what it is. However, the RME ADI-2s offer such value that the combined price is certainly not crazy for an EU manufactured product with these many features and such impeccable performance.

Has anyone used one of these DPS-2s? I can safely assume the audiophile oriented reviews will say how it added an octave to the bass, smoothed out the treble, sharpened the imaging, widened and deepened the soundstage. But more seriously, it seems like a very nicely made supply. If anyone wants to sell theirs, PM me.

I just received mine. Have not set it up with the ADI-2/4 yet. I honestly think it's a very well built high quality PS.

If you can, please let me know your thoughts. Reading the instruction manual, it certainly looks like a state of the art PS. Will it make a difference? Maybe not, but I still may get one.

This unit will not make any audible difference. There are small improvements in noise and SINAD that can be detected with modern measuring instruments. But it is orders of magnitude below any threshold of audibility. Check my thread about the RME LNI-2 unit. The µFilter output is the same.

Are you keeping yours?

Yes, I like the engineering and manufacturing quality of the unit, as well as the prevention of mains noise leakage into the DAC.
Your engineering skills surely are more current than mine since my BSEE is from 1980 and I only practiced until 1983, writing software. That said what I remember was that back then weak power supplies manifested in poor bass response as the capacitors recharged. You could even see pilot lights dim on loud bass transients. But maybe this is more a problem with unregulated supplies, and there is a highly regulated supply inside the ADI-2. Anyways, do you think a 1khz sine wave tells us all we need to know? Would these low impedance power supplies help with loud transients?

No, I don't think this power supply will improve anything other than the noise floor. DAC units are not power amplifiers with a lot of output watts. I didn't notice any changes with a 300 Ohm load. Output power is 0.28 watts unbalanced and 1.13 watts balanced.

Makes sense, especially for me driving a pair of Benchmark AHBs, 50kohm load. No headphones on this system.

I ended up buying the Hifime High-Speed USB Isolator v2 that Matthias referred to in the RME User Forum. Not quite as sophisticated as the Intona but it’s $60, and supposedly fully transparent and provides galvanic isolation.
