Review and Measurements of Oppo UDP-205 UHD Player

While my T778 is going to the repair centre, I've now setup my 203 as my AVR.

It can do almost everything that the T778 can do, except for the turntable input, and no direct streaming capability - although it seems I can use Roon to achieve this. And there is no eARC functionality, so watching Netflix/YT/etc. from the TV is a bit of a manual process, but I can probably get around this with my Harmony remote.

The sub output level also seems to be not very strong from the 203, as the sub is not coming on when it should. If I run a test tone to wake it up, then it keeps working. But if there's enough of a silent spell, the sub goes on standby and doesn't kick back in, unless I manually intervene. But the workaround is to just leave the sub permanently on.

The sound quality to me sounds just as good as the T778.

TBH, I'm struggling to justify why I would want the T778 back...

oppos clip the subwoofer rca out if you set so much as one speaker to small

it’s been like this since the 93/ 95

can’t be fixed

really? Wow...

But setting the speakers to Large would mean too much bass, right?

would pass a full range signal

fine for full, range speakers with large bass drivers

not so good for the average home theatre speaker with 6 inch drivers

Anyone here using Roon with their 203 and figured out how to get Roon to switch on the unit remotely?

Despite my 203 being on Network Standby, Roon doesn't see it unless I switch it on first.

A thread posted today reports the Sony (USA) web store now lists the '800M2' 4K disc player as no longer available.

Are any parts no longer obtainable that would preclude another manufacturer from creating a 4K disc player with the measured performance of the Oppo UDP-205 ?

Is it worth entertaining the thought of moving on from the Oppo 205 from a DAC perspective? I primarily use it for Roon atm

If you look at Amir's review at the beginning of this thread you'll see that there is no reason to add a DAC, unless you want to degrade the output.

Apologies, I meant replacing the Oppo 205 completely - not adding a DAC into the chain with the Oppo

In my opinion (but I'm sure I'll hear from the naysayers), one of the greatest audio components ever released is finally getting a bit too long in the tooth. I mean I still rock an amp & pre-amp from the early 2000s that blows the doors off anything made today, but digital is different. The DAC can now be bettered by newer R2R resistor technology and even the newer 9039 version of the ESS Sabre itself...but more importantly the HDMI ports are stuck in time and can't "switch" the most modern components properly as I have unfortunately found. The thing held out for almost a decade from when it was discontinued...but I think it's time to find another solution. RIP to an absolute classic.

Where would you be looking for a replacement DAC and/or other components?

I bought an A8 Eversolo last year no regrets. But still use my 205 to play Blurays and Dvds. It is connected to A8 using HDMI Arc. Unfortunately this does not allow audio higher than 48khz. But this has not held me back. The A8 sounds better and is a great upgrade. I'm reluctant to change 205 at this stage. It's still an excellent disc player and does 4k video. Don't have surround audio just dedicated stereo. Few of my discs are 96khz anyway. Can't say I hear the difference.

From a price-performance perspective DAC, I'm really impressed from what I've seen by the Topping D900 (or it's little brother the D90iii discreet). Get an inexpensive WIIM or Eversolo streamer & pair it with that...

For media playback w/ updated HDMI ports, I would go with the ES parent company Zidioo UHD8000. Been a fan of their boxes for years (Z9 series)...and that's the top dog
