Nad c298 volume

Hello everyone.
Many thanks for your thoughts and input.
I had a play and discovered the issue.
The problem was the Node 2i.
My pre doesn’t have a remote control so I had turned the volume in the Node to variable. I didn’t think this would drop the level by much. It’s huge!
I turned the volume to fixed and boom.

It’s a shame that the software drops the volume so much. I assumed that full volume in variable mode would be the same as fixed mode. Apparently not.

Thanks again.

Glad you figured it out.

But pre without a remote for how much!? Help me understand.

The pre is a Tom Evans The Vibe. Mr Evans has taken a kicking on the internet recently but he’s a UK legend and it sounds incredible.
I couldn’t say how much they are now.

Cheers

A legend in his own mind? He deserved the internet abuse over that silly phono stage.

I’m not here to argue with you. I was simply asking for advice.
Tom Evans has been designing revered audio equipment for Pioneer, Michell engineering and others for over 40 years.
I was reticent to mention my pre amp but I thought about it and decided mention it. I won’t be bullied by the likes of the baying internet mob (like you) that has unfortunately developed around a story that will fully reveal itself.
I own and have owned numerous components made by Mr Evans and I’ve been very happy. It has sounded great and been reliable.

Thank you.

If the node is like my M33, turning on tone controls will reduce output (I recall it being either 6db or 10db) to give headroom for the tone controls to work. Therefore, you may want to check the node using the BluOS app to see if you turned on tone controls.

Hello.
Thanks. They were turned off.
Setting the “output level fixed” cured the issue.
I feel silly as I’m aware of the negative affects that digital volume can do and stupidly assumed turning the volume slider to full would be the same.

I don't think you were wrong to expect to be able to get full output using the Node volume control. That means the device is a fail for preamp duties, which is how many would use it. I wonder if you have some other setting engaged hat also turns off when volume is set to fixed, as otherwise this sounds very odd.

As far as I can see the Node has no other settings other than the tone controls and variable/fixed volume.
I would be glad to be corrected on this as the volume remote functionality is handy when using my digital source.

I’ve spoken to an electrical genius and he has said the 4ohm load isnt helping and causes distortion in the power amp re. Feedback. Way above my head.
That is nonsense. The amp can easily drive 4ohm and lower, without any distortion at all. I'm gonna suggest your genius isn't the genius he thinks he is. :p

I really, really am not qualified to argue about technical matters - however I can argue pedantic grammatical matters. He didn’t call himself a genius, I did.

I'd be very surprised if the node can't output full volume in variable mode. Did you check for a volume limit in the app, as suggested by another poster?

It looks like there is a volume limit setting also.

No offence intended - I assumed he had convinced you of his credentials.

Mmm. Not sure what’s happening here.
Volume was at maximum.and now when I flip between the two modes the volume stays the same?
Think there’s been a software update in the last week so it could be that?
Other than that it must have been user error and the volume wasn’t on full but after fiddling, it is.

Dam it, I must be now, that age.
