My Kingdom For A Remote Volume Knob! can this be made?

Thanks, I'm familiar with that connection and also with the Surface Dial. I've used the latter with Roon via RooDial. It's nice when it works, but the latency and issues with the Dial taking a while to wake up, have bothered me. So I've switched to using Quick Keys via RooMax. That works great. However, since my MiniDSP Flex is not Roon Ready, it can only control via Roon commands. With a RooADI type software hook, you'd be able to control virtually all of the MiniDSP products, and not just the SHD.

If you find one, get a nice Quad 77 preamp. This is its remote!!

I finally found it!! long term lurker first time poster lol
Been following this topic for the past two years.

I just wanted something premade, simple, wireless and with acceptable price. I finally found it.

this is the review of the wired version:

it's a macro pad with 4 layers so you can have 12 different actions. not that I need it

I set it so that the buttons are previous,play/pause and next
the outer knob to be volume contro. Works perfect. also note that the body and the knobs are machined aluminum and not plastic.
Considering what it is I strongly recommend it for people who need a good wireless music controller.

True no knob but I’m feeling like if you need an IR remote knob then you’re s.o.l. without going the custom route.
You are correct......................so far.

Which is exactly why the this thread exists.

Too bad it uses those annoyingly loud keys, which to me that's a deal breaker especially if it's going to be used in a living room.

they are not really loud, they are actually quite, but they are not silent. also you can easily change them with silent switches. they are hot swappable. So you only need replacement switches and a switch puller all of which will cost you less than $5.

There are actually a lot of decent looking machined aluminum learning IR remotes on aliexpress. I’m on the verge of ordering something like this with 3 buttons. Seem to have good heft to them.
Very interesting and a nice looking cnc milled remote. One of the reviewers has noticed that changing volume requires multiple taps, rather than just holding down the button. This has to do wih IR protocol repeat codes. For instance, the NEC protocol sends repeat codes when buttons are pressed for a longer period.

Please post your experience with the remote if you decide to buy it.

Yet more reasons I'm pleased to have a Bluesound Node whose output volume I can control with my smartwatch dial.

Back around 2007 or 2008 there was this product called a Chestnut Hill George that basically reproduced your iPod library on the handheld remote. It sounded really good, and when it worked having this sweet remote in your hands on the couch was very cool. But it would always become laggy after a few days requiring a power cycle and just seemed to run worse and worse every week. Eventually I binned it.

I did end up buying one and I really like it. So much nicer than the stock plastic remote. Programming was easy and as the poster mentioned you do need to keep the volume up/down button held down while setting the volume keys to get the continuous press to function. Nice feeling click on the buttons and it’s quite heavy. Nowhere near as nice as the remote Matt had made obviously, but pretty good for 25 bucks.

Just wanted to add this one Fish control Volume knob. I WISH WIIM did one of these connected to streamer via Bluetooth, controlling volume digitally.

Like virtually every rotary dial device we see, the issue is that it can’t control products that use IR. Or maybe the issues is that few (none?) of the HIFI integrated amplifiers and preamps can be controlled directly via BT.

I've just found this thread, looking for exactly what everyone else is looking for :)

I have a Node streamer but want a decent rotary volume knob to control it. I find it hard to believe there isn't an IR remote with a rotary dial (beyond DIY or smartwatch).

It depends what you want.

If it's just a remote "knob" to turn, that can easily done with existing IR, but it's going to be an encoder type knob with no positional indication, or persistence.

If you want persistence, accurate positioning/indication on the remote and the device - i.e. both reflecting the same knob settings, you need bi-directional communication which one-way IR products don't have.

Bi-directional remotes were around as early as 1985, most notably in my memory in the B&O 5000 series of components. They used RF not IR and the "master control panel" had indications of volume etc reflected on it, even when you made changes in another room.
