My Kingdom For A Remote Volume Knob! can this be made?

Just to let you know about my latest baby:

rooMax is a Roon Extension that supports the Xencelabs Quick Keys controller ;)

Looks like @Fosi Audio is planning one :
Fosi asked a few of us a few months ago to chose between a few potential designs. But I don't recall seeing that led

See Plan A, Con 3 where the light guide plate is mentioned. Assuming they sent you the same thing as me. It'll be interesting to see if my suggestion about making it user-configurable happened. They didn't go with the suggestion for something much more capable along the lines of these:
https://github.com/scottbez1/smartknob
https://wiki.makerfabs.com/MaTouch_ESP32_S3_2.1_Rotary_TFT_with_Touch.html
https://docs.m5stack.com/en/core/M5Dial
Hardly surprising as it seems they were a fair way through prototyping by then.

I can see that the FOSI Audio VOL2o is a Bluetooth Multimedia Volume Control Knob with RGB light.

I was hoping for a volume knob supporting infrared signalling.

Let us hope that it does not suffer from bluetooth sleep mode problems as seen with the Microsoft Surface Dial

I have such a hatred for the stupid multifunctional remote for my Cambridge Audio CXN V2 that I’m considering a different streamer, why do companies use the shittiest lumps of plastic on the one part of the equipment that you are constantly in touch with?.

I think there's some inevitable tradeoff here between latency and battery life. I don't have a good feel for how much it is with BLE though.

Interesting.
If not outrageously priced (<$100), I'm in for at least one of these - also assuming they fix the wobble on the rotating knob part, as shown in the video. :)
The programmability of the device will be a key feature, so depends on the 'app', too. The wireless solution is key, too - it would be nice to have a control device that can work with a variety of OS's; switchability between, say, IOS and Win devices would be mighty handy.

Can someone compare what this is supposed to do iwith that of the MS Surface Dial?

If you watch the video you can see that the button tilts much more when you press it from the side than the Surface Dial.
The axis of rotation seems to be poorly mounted...

Does anyone know if the Surface Dial support double, triple and long press?

Has anyone joined a Surface Dial with a IR blaster, such as the Broadlink RM mini?

This depends on the software you use with the Surface Dial. The Dial itself only sends press events.
Using the Surface Dial with rooExtend double, tripple and long press are supported. You also can customize effects of the gestures.

I somehow missed this until last week, but purchased the Quick Keys, and installed rooMax on a rPi4. The performance is night and day better than the Surface Dial. Zero latency. Still working on configuring the buttons to my liking. I wish the knob was more along the ergonomics of the Surface Dial, but the performance is so much better that I'll give up the ergonomics for it. Once @DrCWO gets rooDSP up and running I'll be a very happy camper. Thank you sir for a job very well done!

So I’ve started a thread on the Roon community forum to help promote interest in having the abilility to control MiniDSP devices (ready or non-Roon Ready) with the Quick Keys through rooMax. Currently rooMax can control only volume on a non-Roon Ready MiniDSP device. With a rooExtend connection to MiniDSP, you would be able to control volume at the device itself rather than DSP volume, change input sources, select profiles, put it in standby or wake it back up,.. It will make a really attractive remote for a Flex (or other devices) and have a knob for volume. If you have some interest in this please speak up here and/or at the following thread: https://community.roonlabs.com/t/rooextend-for-minidsp/280951

Thinking about applicable remotes - with or without a volume knob - I would say that it is the Infrared capability that make remotes interesting. This is due to the ability to directly control lots of audio equipment, not just your computer.

If you are only going to control an app on your laptop/desktop, obviously, you can use your favorite wireless mouse - equipped with a rotary encoder - as a remote with zero latency.

For instance, I have programmed my mouse to be used as a remote to do the following for Foobar2000 under Windows:
  • Left button: Stop
  • Right Button: Play/Pause
  • Left button Held: Previous track
  • Right Button Held: Next track
  • Left button Held (longer): Previous playlist
  • Right button Held (longer): Next playlist
  • Scroll Wheel: Volume up/down
  • Scroll Wheel mode change: Seek ahead/back
  • Scroll Wheel Held: Shuffle playlist playback

Yes, it is infrared that is the gateway to most devices we use in audio. Unfortunately, there are no universal remote devices that I’m aware of that offer a rotary know, hence the reason for this thread. RooExtend offers the ability to control volume (which is the primary concern in this discussion) on devices that are Roon Ready and via Roon on those that are not. The author of RooExtend, who is a member here, has recently added the ability to get to other functions via the Xencelabs Quick Keys remote, which is BT based. I have a Quick Keys, and it’s a very nice product.

He has also developed the ability to control RME ADI-2 products, and I’ve been talking with him about MiniDSP devices as well. With this type of connection, if you have Roon running, you can control these products even when you are listening to other sources. I’ve started a thread to gauge interest in the development of a MiniDSP connection.
