My Kingdom For A Remote Volume Knob! can this be made?

If it's just a remote "knob" to turn, that can easily done with existing IR

Where? Can you send a link to one?

I bought one of the aliexpress IR aluminium remote controls as pictured below to replace/render the bloody awfulCambridge Audio CXN-V2 remote redundant. It was easy enough to program for volume up/down, power off/on, mute/unmute, skip back/forward but the menu function needed me to program/assign functions to presets 1/2/3 using the Cambridge remote then assigning the presets to F1/F2/F3 on the aliexpress remote, such as switching usb mode etc.

There may be a way to assign sub menu control on the aliexpress remote but I sorta worked around the issue

All working fine now so I’m a happy bunny, the Cambridge remote is now in the drawer.

I was waiting for that ;) , yes I know there is no knob, find me a ir learning remote knob that will work with my Cambridge CXN-V2 without f*****g around and I’ll buy one.

Your CXN-V2 is Roon ready, so if you use Roon, you can control it with a Quickeys and rooMax. There is a bit of either f*****g around or spending money, but once it’s working it works great.

My aliexpress remote cost £17 delivered and does everything I need once programmed, how much is what you mentioned and would it work with Mac?.

It’s a lot more than £17. Assuming you have Roon, the easy button is to buy the RooExtend Box for $380 https://shop.rooextend.com/en-us/products/rooextend-box, $95 for the RooMax License, and the Xencelabs Quick Key for $99. https://www.xencelabs.com/us/store/...ym8feSZCfrhjx3r5Xkb9fUpgILf8hU4Ymqn9TLFRaXo_D

You can cut a fair about of cost off of that by purchasing a Rpi4 for under $100 instead of the preconfigured RooExtend Box, and installing the software on that. It’s not difficult, and @DrCWO offers great support.

Yeah a lot for a knob, but it’s worth it to a quite a few people,

Yeah, all that faff/expense etc ain’t happening ;) , I now have exactly what I need :)

This one is kinda interesting. Has IR learning capabilities and a knob for volume control. I wonder if the knob could be taken off and a nicer one installed.

:eek:Arghhhhhhhh…godamm……it’s got a bloody wheel.

But on closer inspection it’s made of plastic and is rather large.

I have one of these mounted on my wall nearby listening position, and program it as simple volume up/volume down. It has a 3 gang switch plate around it so it just looks like a standard wall switch. It completely blends in and has way better connectivity than an IR remote. Downside is you need to do some custom integrations with Home Assistant, Logitech Harmony, and Lutron Caseta. They even make one that has audio iconography on it with a Sonos tie in. They tend to be more expensive than the basic pico remotes for no discernible reason or benefit.

Already linked in #264 along with a couple of alternatives. Also worth a look:
DFRobot FireBeetle ESP32-C6 - a cheap board with built in LiPo battery management, and ZigBee as well as the usual WiFi and bluetooth.

The devices are really not the issue. It is making the devices work with our equipment that matters.

Not for me, and not when this thread started: there was next to nothing - everything was either not available anymore, or not existing yet -

I've used the MS Dial, and now Quick Keys. Both will control Roon, but neither will control my MiniDSP Flex. When I'm listening via Roon that's fine. When I change to vinyl, or CD, I can't control volume with either.

This really looks great :)
I will order one today and see on how I can integrate this as a Roon Extension within rooExtend.

Best DrCWO
Hi Dr. Please advise us as soon as you integrated this. I have been using your RooADi and Surface Dial and I'm very happy. Thanks!
