Is it a California thing to grind those S trenches into the bowls? I had not seen that before and it is kinda nuts.

Not sure exactly what you mean, would need a photo to be sure... what I can tell you is most of the US west gets serious bumps on every f***ing run that isn't groomed and sometimes they just let them build up to a massive degree.
The only place I've seen a real serpentine "bump run" without bumps all over the rest of the run was Japan. It was just one long s-shaped track in a straight line down the hill. That's how it oughta be, I say. (I'm a snowboarder.)
No, not moguls. I enjoy ungroomed. It seems folks follow each other and do over and over again until they create a trench few feet deep all the way down the bowl. I don't know what they call it and can't find anything on youtube with a quick search.
I am not too up speed on gear. What Atomics are those? I ski on few years old vantage and my daughter skis Bent Chetlers (plus she has park skis, is known as the Rail Queen from high school days).
Really I am not a gear guy though I never know how to choose this stuff. Audio is much easier for me! And yes poles are just poles and they will get bent.

Atomic Maverick 86 C. A recreational ski. I'm not intending on going really fast and aggressive this time out. Too old for that stuff and I don't want to get injured. I set my price range of about $450 and then chose the best ski in my opinion that was available from the local shop. Nothing sciency here for me...

The local small hill in the city core. Hill is the correct term because it is not a mountain. It's in the city core.
LoL... I think the elevation change at the inner city hill is maybe 300 feet. It's a very small hill.
Going to Alta Badia, Italy in the beginning of February. Last winter I was twice in the Dolomites (Alta Badia and Val Gardena). My boots are slightly narrower (98 mm). Last winter they were just fine - only one day of slight discomfort - but in 2023 winter (Les Arcs, France) they absolutely killed my heels. Last winter though I started applying heel cream two months before the trip AND wearing the boots at home every now and then (with Sidas rubber outsoles on!). That seemed to do the trick.
"Here" is the Black Forest in Germany. Peaks at about 1100m heigth in the northern part.
Florence is too far in the south and away from the alps. Go to South Tirol for skiing.
Yes that is why I don't think I can make it work. I think there are some ski areas in Tuscany but if I were to do it I would want to hit the Dolomites.

South Tirol seconded, in summer too for walking.
It should be a good season in the Pacific Northwest. I bought my season tickets last spring. Perhaps too soon, as my son snapped his tibia and fibula doing slalom training in July (Mt. Hood's Palmer glacier stays open for training in the summer).
I rock some Kastle's, which I feel like should be the "official ski of the discerning audiophile," for all the good and bad that it entails. Actually, it's a great ski that I got on clearance. It's a fat big mountain ski that strangely carves like it's on rails, at least when the edges are sharp. Downside is that it's more capable than playful in the powder, of which there should be plenty this year.

Anyone getting good days on the snow? I had a good start in Dec but then too much work and some family stuff messed up winter plans. But had a great day today. After some nice morning runs at Killington, the school break crowd ran me off the mt. So I headed to Pico where the snow was much better and most lift chairs were empty. So I had a really great rest of the day. Capped off at the bar there, which is a really good one.

I actually got to go on a really exceptional trip recently, to courchevel / chamonix. The snow was just OK but we still managed to hike a bit and get some really fun off-piste and side-country stuff.
(you can just see my buddy there in the middle)

They get temperature inversions in the valley a lot, apparently.
Not pictured: the day we almost skiied off a cliff, even with a guide, at Courmayeur because we were doing off-piste in a pea soup cloud.
Ironically I have not made it up to Tahoe yet this year.
