Jazz ♫ Music only | In the now, or recently, or that you love...

Stereophile posted an article on their new jazz album, Molto Molto, which was recommended upthread here, and John Atkinson commented on upthread here. ASR member John Atkinson, co-producer of the album, gives a lot of details about the music, with composer Sasha Matson, and about the recording process. A nice read on a modern big band jazz recording project.

This'll cure the Monday blues. From 1981, Allmusic: "Altoist Paquito D'Rivera's first American recording after defecting from Cuba is an often-jubilant affair... The music is high-quality modern bebop with a strong dose of Latin rhythms -- a fine example of D'Rivera's talents." The strong bass line is either Russell Blake on electric or Eddie Gomez on acoustic.

I've suggested Paquito previously. ;) He was an original member of the Caribbean Jazz Project in 1993, and their 1st 2 albums, with videos, were recommended upthread here. To continue a 42 year journey, Paquito's latest album, I Missed You Too!, with pianist Chucho Valdes, was recommended, with videos, upthread here.

From Spill Magazine: "Djabe has made its name as a top notch jazz band from Hungary and Steve Hackett, of course, is famous as the guitarist for Genesis... They have worked together on 7 albums.

Live in Gyor ... has some surprises for Genesis fans: 'Hairless Heart', 'Firth of Fifth', 'In That Quiet Earth' and '‘Los Endos'... Other songs are a mix of originals by both... Hackett seems to be in his element playing with Djabe and the two work together extremely well."

A fusion feel, jazzier than probably expected. The video is a short mash of 2 Genesis classics. A blu-ray is available. A lot of nice Hackett concert footage on YouTube, btw. Please enjoy a 73 year old prog legend, jazzin' it up a bit.

From AllAboutJazz: "This richly dynamic live set shows that even the smartest essays don't need to be difficult. Essays on Jazz... is the first time pianist Maria Baptist has recorded with a quintet. The saxophone of Jan von Klewitz deftly weaves an intimate counterpoint, while Richard Maegraith's alto sax and bass clarinet add slinky tones. Fabian Timm plays bass while Heinz Lichius drums. ...Sit back and simply relish an eloquent combo spinning some truly beautiful moods."

Maria is a music professor in Germany, and this is her ~15th album since 2000. The video is a short taste of Maria and Jan. Please enjoy a nice new jazz album.

From Allmusic: "Time In, issued in 1965, was the last of pianist and composer Dave Brubeck's 'Time' recordings, and one of his most musically adventurous. Gone are the moody, silky textures and glissando moves of Time Out, or Time Further Out. In fact, of all the 'Time' recordings, this is the least commercial and, in places, almost hard bop-oriented among them... Though it is seldom celebrated as such, this is one of Brubeck's finest moments on Columbia."

Please take your Time, In enjoying Dave Brubeck Day, 5/4, of course.

Allmusic: "During 1968-72, Brubeck's Quartet usually featured baritonist Gerry Mulligan, bassist Jack Six and drummer Alan Dawson. For this very logical record, altoist Paul Desmond (who was with Brubeck from 1951-67) makes the group a quintet and his interplay with Mulligan is consistently delightful."

Dave Brubeck bashes and even goes free a bit on this (it is a 16 minute 'Take 5'), but Mulligan and Desmond are the highlights on this fun show from 1973, with good sound.

Today was Dave Brubeck Day in the USA, 5/4, but I assume that it was celebrated on the 5th of April in Europe (and possibly everywhere else)? You know, 5/4. ;)
