EQ Software for Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS/iPadOS and Android.

I got part way through the installation of Sound Control and then

That's interesting, I didn't have to do that. I wonder why. Maybe I set up my Mac to allow installation of system extensions from all developers or something (or even a previous Mac, this is my third and each time I did the full migration).

I don't mind paying for software that's good, if the price corresponds to my sense of its value.

For a little more money get SoundSource from Rogue Amoeba. The problem they had with their new ARC audio kext has been resolved and they are properly signed Apple Developers. It looks like this company, StaticZ, has basically cloned several of Rogue Amoeba's apps.

Apple's new security policies make things difficult to get around. Those of us who use plugins that are called after an app loads are often a couple OS updates behind until they work out bugs in audio land.

Oh yeah. Rogue Amoeba. I used Airfoil and Audio Hijack in the before times.

I'm trying their SoundSource right now and can apply EQ but I didn't see how to set a per device profile. For example: set a bass cut for the BT speaker but not for any other audio output device. I sent a support request to ask.

Yeah, SoundSource does filters by app instead of device. If you use an AU plugin like the free Qrange from Ikjb which gives you 12 PEQ bands & HP + LP you can save the setting within the plugin as a preset and load the filters whenever you direct a source app to the BT speaker or just have Qrange in the effects list for every app but just not turned on unless you use the speaker. Not seamless, but depends how often you use that BT speaker.

StaticZ SoundControl has the features that works for me. But the install is terrible.

I use the speaker a couple of times a day.

Yup, 1 click is better than 3. ;)

I think if you purchase and downloaded the app through the official Mac Appstore it would probably be properly signed and not need the Terminal to validate permissions.

Actually there's no clicks. I turn on the BT speaker, it connects, macos switches to it and the EQ applies. Turn it off and the macos chooses the built ins.

There's a thought.

I am a Mac user and I've downloaded eqmac because I like having a system eq.The free version still allows to save multiple custom settings with only a 10bands eq. The pro version allows to access a parametric eq, which I think could be the way to go. Only, I find eqmac very poorly reacting; often when I want to play something it may take several mute seconds before hearing the sound, and sometimes it freezes. Wondering if this occurs only with the free version or it is a buggy behavior no matter what. Has anybody experience to share? Or, could you indicate any other system eq which allows parametric eq in order to choose each frequency and Q? Thanks

I’d say if you’re going to pay, and you’re on a Mac, just buy Soundsource

I have read about it, but as far as I can understand it seems it does not feature a parametric eq but just 10 fixed bands, just like the free version of eqMac. Am I wrong?

Even better - it can host Mac AU plugins which gives you free options for either PEQ or hosting convolution filters via FIR. Go back to page 1 for a list of plugins.

This! Not only can it host the free Apple AU parametric EQ, but it can also host any AU, and there are many free and paid parametric EQ AUs you can download. Soundsource is very versatile, and is updated very often. You can also use it to host crossfeed/speaker simulation AUs. I use it for work as a mixing and mastering engineer every day.

Thank you all for your advice. I'll dive into the thing trying to understand how easy it will be to install those plugin, as I am an absolute newby. I downloaded REW and made some measurements; probably not accurate, but still got some listening improvement just by nibbling a bit with the 10 band eq in eqMac. That's why I am confident that something better could be made with more custom made settings. One last very dumb question: should I purchase Soundsource I could transfer it to a new Mac computer, should I upgrade it?

When I was on Windows OS, there's this nifty but insanely powerful program I used as well called Breakaway Audio Enhancer

Long thread - anyone with feelings about the best current Linux option to provide same functionality as Equalizer APO + Peace in Windows? I am thinking of using Linux Mint for a time with our two Windows desktops, so I don't have to buy new hardware in the Fall...

Probably EasyEffects - you should be able to install it from the package manager gui, and it is a gui app itself. For the latest version you'd need flatpak which is a little more involved, and probably not necessary unless you run into a bug or want a new feature.

Thanks, I will check that one out!

Just wanted to leave a note that Vizzdom started working again on macOS > 15.3, maybe even lower... I did not change anything, probably Apple fixed something on their side

I have been using DSoniq Realphones program with great success. It's a professional headphone processor with EQ, room emulation, variable speaker field emulation, subwoofer emulation and many other features. It's a paid software but it is good value, in my opinion anyway.
