Hello, I've been considering getting an echo dot as a chromecast audio alternative which is not available to me.
The previous generations of echo dot used a TI DAC3203 which is rather poor (https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tlv320dac3203.pdf), the 4th generation does not seem to use it:

Looking over the teardown I cannot find any DAC chip in the boards.
There is only a headphone driver diode: PAM8908.
Can anyone understand what chip is being used as the DAC for the analog output?

Does anyone have a gen 4 echo dot and can give his impressions on the sound quality when using the analog out?

DAC is probably integrated in either main CPU IC or WiFi-BT one similar to one on higher integrated MT8516 SoC. Interesting enough they used quad chenel Burr Brown ADC.

It says: "a TLV320ADC5140 Texas Instruments Quad-channel 768-kHz Burr-Brown™ audio analogue to digital converter." I don't have one, but don't mind the signal from 3rd gen for casual listening several hours a day. OOps -- guess thats just for the microphones.

@skinnyq if the earlier one is to be rated poor than this one can only be rated poorer.

Few more teardowns for the Dot 4 could be found below:

I do have Echo Dot 5 and in terms of Hi-Fi quality I'm not very pleased with how it sounds, but it sounds decent enough for my kid and for anyone that is not looking for a Hi-Fi speaker. I mean, it does the job of playing audio with an output power able to fill-in a bedroom without troubles, but without bass, of course. :)

However, Echo 4 is playing in a different league and, for a moderate output power level, it sounds pretty good in a bedroom and quite in a living room, given it's price and what was designed for. The two tweeters are able to cover a wide angle of the room and, if there's a glass table underneath, then trebles will also get reflected even better across the room. Teardown here: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/...n-echo-4-teardown-and-few-measurements.40636/

Looks like the above Echo devices are all sharing the same audio Class-D amplifier chip: https://www.ti.com/product/TAS5805M, Echo 4 containing two of such chips on the board, probably one for the woofer and the other one for the two tweeters.
