Do you have prejudices that you can't get rid of? (Lets stick to audio)

2. Anything in Black Ash. Friends don’t let friends buy black ash finishes.

Black Ash - the choice of the undecided. :)

I had a pair of speakers in black ash, mainly because I couldn't make my mind up about the other finishes. And black goes with everything, right?

It was quite a nice, real wood finish, not the cheesy, black wood grain effect, vinyl wrap you used to get on a lot of speakers in the 80s.

On the subject of aesthetics, I don't like speaker cones/drivers that aren't black.

‘Whizzer’ cones attached to ‘full range’ drivers, any speaker whose designer believes that instead of a transducer the loudspeaker should be an instrument in its own right.

Ooh... I forgot Von Schweikert speakers. I love Von Schweikert speakers. Albert was a wonderful human being.

Hard domed tweeters and compression drivers. Don't know why, maybe it's just hearing some poorly implemented ones.

I confess an irrational dislike of RCA connectors, overpriced audiophile bling, skinny floorstanders - and an equally irrational inclination towards such inherently flawed designs as dome mids and MTM layouts.

I'll bite. What's wrong with dome mids? Educate me please, I didn't know there was anything wrong with them.

A ridiculously narrow usable frequency range inside of which they exhibit an unrestricted, splashy directivity unless heavily waveguided, no X to speak of hence SPL limitation in the lower part of their already narrow range -- nevertheless I find them unique when done right , to the point of using some in my 1st - and to this day, only achieved - attempt at DIY
Edit : and getting what I deserved, directivity-wise

My prejudices are based on negative experiences and all of them were self-inflicted:
  • "There's something magical about vinyl playback"
    • Apparently, it's the magic of distortion accompanied by an occasional snap, crackle, and pop.
  • "Inexpensive multi-channel audio gear will replicate the sound of the theater in your living room"
    • Utter nonsense unless you want to replicate the sound of a bad theater at home.
  • "Replacing your Snell speakers with more efficient Klipsch speakers will allow louder playback on music & soundtracks and not impact sound quality"
    • Let's just say I hated the Klipsch sound immediately and learned to never buy anything without listening to it firsthand. This has been my biggest mistake as an audio consumer. They were, at least, louder - until I got rid of them shortly thereafter.

I owned VR4 Gen II and around that time I remember visiting the factory, a brief look around with Albert, and he was a very good guy from that brief meeting.

That was just before they had the big flood that they almost didn’t come back from.

And I still do. They may be older versions but do the job well enough.

Can you still buy licenses for them? I misplaced my license, I bought them so long ago.

I have no idea if you are right or not because I have never looked, but i'll assume that since nobody on ASR has jumped on you ... that nobody disagrees. Thank you for your response :)

Wow, what a fantastic collection of prejudices so far. I even found a few prejudices that I share but wasn't aware of. :)

It took me some time to understand some posts because of the abbreviations (AMT. ESL etc.). Maybe we should set up an abbreviation list at ASR. Perhaps in the form of a field where you enter the abbreviation and then the full term appears (e.g. AMT->Air Motion Transformer). Just a thought.

Edit:
And then I made mistake in the first post. Aramid and glass fiber are not the same. Aramid is a plastic fiber. I think the much too large B&W midrange speakers are made of Aramid. But my prejudice regarding preferred membrane materials actually relates to glass fiber membranes like these:

I should cultivate my prejudices with a certain amount of care.
