CEC not working when Apple TV connected to Denon X3800H.
I really appreciate to know if other users can report CEC working (power switching AVR+TV on/off and volume control up/down via HDMI) when Apple TV 4K 3rd Gen with TVOS 17.5.1 is directly connected to Denon X3800H AVR with latest firmware version 6300-7153-9042-4730 DTS Version 4.30.10.15. This is to gain evidence about a software or hardware issue.
My use case scenario:
TV Sony 4K (Android) <--> AVR Denon X3800H with directly connected to AVR:
Power switching on/off devices using respective remotes as well as volume control via HDMI. This has been working well before.
Two weeks ago we had a light stroke nearby, which trashed my Denon X3800H and the SAT receiver (SetTopBox STB). The Smart TV as well as the Apple TV seemed not being affected – but this might be wrong assumption.
The new equipment recently has arrived (same AVR) and a very similar new SAT receiver, but the Apple TV is not accepting to work with CEC esp. when directly connected to the AVR even as the only device being connected.
Since my Sony 4K TV only supports ARC the use case is that all HDMI source devices are directly connected to the AVR – as it was working before the light stroke event.
I could restore AVR settings from a previously saved configuration so I am quite confident that all AVR settings are the same.
This post is not about discussion if CEC shall be used or not.
Now since I am affected with this very basic issue that whenever I connect the Apple TV to my Denon X3800H AVR the ATV CEC function to control TV or receiver is turned off and cannot be turned on. The ATV message says that I shall turn on CEC at the TV and Receiver respectively. If the STB was connected then CEC is not working any more.
It is obvious that I shall review if I can borrow an ATV for testing. But I think asking the wider community has much more potential of gathering the desired information at lowest effort.
What else has been tested:
So I cannot comment about possible impact of those recent software changes. But the desired scenario where 3 devices (cf. use case) were connected to X3800H with CEC and without using ARC control enabled was fully functional before. And the test with the LG TV has same behavior without volume control being functional.
If Apple TV is connected to AVR then CEC functions do not work anymore. Disconnecting ATV requires a power cycle to get CEC working again.
Tests have been carried out as careful as possible using following this sequence:
Thanx in advance.

- STB VuPlus DUO 4K SE
- Apple TV 4K 3rd Gen
- Sony BlueRay Player

- HDMI-Audio output: AVR
- HDMI PassThrough: On
- Pass Through-Source: last
- Remote control Source: On + Source
- HDMI Control: On
- ARC: ON
- TV Audio-Switching: On
- Powerswitching: All
- Energy saving: On

What else has been tested:
- ATV connected to various HDMI ports as single HDMI input (no impact)
- with CEC enabled (TV+AVR) variation of ARC enabled / disabled (no impact)
- settings of TV switching (AVR) does not have any impact
- different cables did not have any impact
- A test using the ATV connected directly to my Sony TV (Android): CEC could be enabled and ATV turned off the TV during power down. Volume control was not possible using the Apple TV remote.
- A test using the ATV connected to an LG Smart TV (WebOS): CEC could be enabled and ATV turned off the TV during power down. Volume control was not possible using the Apple TV remote.

Tests have been carried out as careful as possible using following this sequence:
- Make sure HDMI settings are correct (STB features input settings for TV as well as AVR HDMI ports)
- Power off all devices from mains
- Disconnect all cables
- Power on all devices then power off again to reset CEC
- Connect HDMI cable for 1st device connected to AVR to test
- Power on AVR and then power on the 1st device respectively.
- Then power off both and try to power on using device remote control
- Then add cables for next device before power on next device connected
Thanx in advance.
