Hi everyone! First post on the forum. I'm looking for advice on a pair on monitors to buy. I've already done quite a but of research, and have narrowed my choices, but first let me explain my situation.
So I’m moving into a new apartment in Brooklyn, where space is, as you’d expect, limited. My setup will most likely be in the main room, which is about 10x17 square feet. Of course this will not be a dedicated studio space as we will also have a couch, TV, and maybe other furniture. The only viable place for me to setup is along the long wall, and slightly off center. There happens to be some exposed brick right in front of where I will set up, and the rest of the room is normal drywall. I don’t know how the brick will affect the sound but I imagine it will be no worse than a regular wall. The room is not treated and I have no plans to treat it at this point, though I may do so in the future. So I need a monitor that I know will sound good and not overwhelm an untreated room.
I am particularly wanting a monitor with solid low end and great clarity in the lower mids, and I have read good things about Kali monitors in this regard. However of course I want as much detail and clarity as possible across the spectrum. I do have Sonorworks room correction software, which has worked well for me in the past, though I have found it tends to make everything below 200 Hz sound quite dry and dead, which is why I’m hoping the monitor I buy is already solid in that range. On the other hand, because of the size limitations of the room, and because I’m not familiar with the room, I have reservations about getting an 8" woofer.
With all that in mind, the monitors I'm deciding between are as follows:
Kali LP-6 - (Have heard great things about low end response, however slightly worried about muddiness in lower mids and also hiss)
Kali LP-8 - (Same as above, although measurements didn't look quite as flat as for the LP-6?)
Kali IN-8 - (Really love the 3-way design and willing to spend more for it, however as stated before, concerned it might be too much monitor for the room)
Fluid Audio FX80 - (Heard good things about Fluid Audio, but again concerned about low end muddiness with these ported monitors)
Fluid Audio FPX7 - (Interesting and unique design, haven't heard much about it otherwise though)
Focal Alpha 65 - (Seems like a great reliable choice. Have mixed on this monitor before)
I was also considering the Mackie MR line, but it seems like the above choices are superior in most ways. Would love to hear advice from people who have owned these monitors, or just what your recommendations would be given the room I'll be working in. Thanks!
