Fact is, for me, that many HDCDs (that actually use HDCD features, especially peak extend) sound better than other pressings available. Maybe the same sound quality would have been possible using normal CD format. I don't know.
I just found out about HDCD a few years ago and didn't know I actually have quite a few HDCDs. Playing them with HDCD encoding enabled (ripped CDs, played in foobar2000) really boosts sound quality. Some of them sound really poor (and compressed) without HDCD encoding but great with HDCD encoding. I also compared different pressings for some albums and the HDCD version usually wins for me. Others might think different.
