I know for certain there are differences between the EDT770 and EDT770VB pads. They do not differ only in color.
Have no idea about the 990 pads but will find out soon enough as the DT990 pads are the same as the DT880 pads. As I have grey DT990 pads (new ones) they are easy to compare with the black pads. DT770 pads differ a lot from the DT880/DT990 pads.

I just ordered a DT880 myself. I'm giving up on the expensive world of headphones. I will be sticking with the Verum 1 for 90% of life and the DT880 as my gaming cans.

Philips Fidelio L2 - Main listening headphones, I really enjoy them. I put a small pad on the headband because they were hurting the top of my head and replaced the earpads with sheepskin ones from Taobao. I used to have Brainwavz pads but I found them to be too large for the mid-sized over-ear form factor of the L2s. I tried EQing them using the standard correction files but I actually find I prefer them without any EQ. On the other hand, I prefer EQ on the ES10s, which are a little heavy on the mids without any EQ which makes them sound a bit muddled to me.

Beyerdynamic DT1350 - I bought these to replace Audio-Technica ATH-ES770Hs that I lost a few years back, as portable headphones. I really liked those ES770, and the DT1350 sound great (maybe better?) but I don't like the fit as much. They really sit directly on the ear and protrude a lot, which I find a bit uncomfortable, especially when moving my head around a lot.

Audio-Technica ATH-ES10 - Bought these after the DT1350s because I really wanted the ES770H style and I managed to nab these for around 70 USD shipped on Amazon Japan. Cleaned them up and replaced the super worn out headband and earpads (again with sheepskin ones on Taobao, amazing what you can find there) and they are better than new. I think I may actually prefer the sound of the ES770H but I really love the comfort of these for a portable. They sit on but also around the ear, are super compact, isolate reasonably well, and sound great to me.

Massdrop x Nuforce EDC3 - I used these for about a year for portable listening. I have always had trouble finding IEMs that fit me well, that don't slowly fall out over time or irritate my ears. Sadly these ended up irritating my ears as well. I ended up developing a chronic ear infection. After talking to an ear specialist about it and getting my ears checked out over a few weeks' time, the doctor recommended I don't use IEMs anymore as the skin inside my ear happens to be particularly sensitive and prone to abrasion. So I use the ES10s as my portable headphone of choice nowadays. Well, actually, since Covid-19, my girlfriend uses them for telecommuting :). She also prefers them to the DT1350 for the fit.

Beyerdynamic DT990 - my first pair going into appreciation of good headphones. I loved them.
Beyerdynamic T1 - upgraded from DT990 to these. I think the only real improvement I felt was in positional audio.
Monoprice M1060 - wanted to try planars, so this is my first planar pair. WOW. my beyers never saw the light of day again.
Monoprice M1060C - my mom thought my M1060 was too loud. I liked the increased bass from the closed design, but ultimately stopped using them because it was so awkward trying to use voice chat without hearing myself.
Audeze LCD-X - after all these pairs I decided while I was on vacation I would try out tons of headphones. I tried the entire Audeze lineup, Focals (hated them tbh), and Stax and a ton of other brands at some headphone stores. Ultimately, it was between the LCD-4z and LCD-X. I couldn't afford the LCD-4z lol.
I really wanna see an MX4 closed or something that's just lightweight and closed but sounds like my LCD-X ><

There is a lot of felt in the regular DT 880 Edition, two layers (white) behind the driver and one (brown) stuck to the front, if that helps.
I'm not so sure about the pads, there are a number of different velours pads for the 770/880/990/Custom Studio etc. models, but the regular "EDT 990V" and "990VB" should be pretty much identical exept color (Beyerdynamic recommends them as replacement pads for both the regular and the Black Edition, so no change there). But maybe they included some other pads and unfortunately, I don't think they specify that anywhere.

DT880 Black Special edition is measured, listened to, compared and modified.
My findings are posted here.

Interesting finds. They sell the thing with pads that are completely different to the recommended replacement part. Thats probably not a very smart move.

If I may add one thing, then that you should probably refer to the "original DT880" as it's really called: "DT 880 Edtion (250 Ohm)", because there are so many versions (that's not even all of them, the tested "880 Pro Black Edition" version is not included as are some other special versions): https://geizhals.de/?cmp=114301&cmp=222163&cmp=2285745&cmp=693050&cmp=2285744&cmp=773224
It's really confusing, at least on the German market. They might even be called differently in other countries.

The DT880 I refer to is indeed the Edition, (straight cable) there is also a Pro version with coiled cable and a Manufaktur.
I have changed the naming in the article, thanks for the pointer.
Beyerdynamic's type-naming is indeed a bit confusing.
I suspect the Black Special Edition is the same as the Beyerdynamic DT880 Premium Limited-Edition Black with the only exception being the serial number and type number label.
The Manufaktur is a nice touch where you can customize your own headphone:

The DT880 Edition looks like it has a very nice frequency response. Mine actually just came yesterday and it sounds really good. I purchased it brand new for $160. Has to be one of the best value buys for headphones around.

Not much of a headphone guy; I prefer loudspeakers. I currently own a pair of Grado SR125s and a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3s, primarily for air travel.

So is it one or two different models here with and without "Edition"?

Edition has a straight cable, the Pro has a coiled cable and higher clamping force. That is the only difference A.F.A.I.K.
The Manufaktur can be personalized but has the same drivers.
I assume the grey and black pads here too will make the sound somewhat different.

I ordered new grey pads. Going to check if the new grey ones measure the same as the old grey ones or are similar to the black ones.

My 600ohm dt880s said "Edition" on the box. Is that the same Edition you measured in green @solderdude?

The 600 Ohm version (as well as the 32 Ohm) have different drivers and most likely won't measure the same.

Right. But I am looking at your recent DT880 measurements. In one graph there is a green line labeled "Edition." Is that the 600ohm version or is that something different?

Both measured DT880's are the 250 Ohm version which is mentioned in the article and the specs mentioned in the articles.
The most recent measurements are not the Edition but the Black Special Edition headphones.
The black pads is what appears to be responsible for the shift in tonal balance compared to the 'normal' DT880 Edition.
