How about the 50's/60's spoken word LP's usually concerning living in an expensive Manhattan apartment and meeting some girl at the elevator every morning wearing a red dress and stiletto heels. Some college DJ had a collection that he would play as a show once in a while.

?

I have no idea what you're referring to. Examples?

I'll have to do some research, there was a whole genre of these rich bachelors telling stories of their conquests in perfect deep voices. Mad Men era stuff.

So it was....porn?

Not at all, I guess it was before your time. It was sort of like some of the stories in early issues of Playboy being totally explicit was still considered crass and off limits.

Here is an example from a history of spoken word LP's.

Oh my goodness, that is just hideous.
Yes, quite remarkable. There's been a recent revival of this species of Lounge Music, doubtless related to the nostalgic revival of the LP.

I've been a fan of this music genre for a while, but I've never heard of the spoken word subgenre to the bachelor pad.

It goes well with my Henry Mancini / Pink Panther LP....colored in pink, naturally.

I'm sure Amir would approve. Of course, Mancini is a great composer in his baliwick, this being very much in the bachelor pad musical mode.

Like the "Real Detective" mags my dad used to read in the 50-60s.
Again, if the source is a digital file of some sort, like a digital transfer from an analog original (what most LP s of 'Classic Rock ' use) then just skip the LP. Use the digital file instead. This is a big reason that the current L.P. revival makes no sense to me.
That's the way I did all my needle-drops before I sold all my LP's. But that would take all the fun out of it for the vinyl heads, it's the ritual, the gear, and the tweaking to play music that makes it all desirable to them.
These are exact reasons I dumped it all, I have no interest in all that hassle any more. I prefer to sit in the listening chair and control my entire collection with my pad and remote. I don't have a hand crank to start my pickup truck either. ;) LOL

I posted here the response of JPJ's phono setup with a constant velocity 500-50k sweep from one of the better test LP's. Almost dead flat to 50k (yes the distortion goes to ~10% by the end). I have the CBS Lab's LP with CV sweeps (no RIAA) at three radii to check for wavelength loss and have not noticed any deterioration.

Did some playing today. Same cartridge (not the one from ^ ) with three different test records:

The XG7002 record follows closest to the factory measurement:

I think it's also the illusion that with sufficient tweakery and knowledge, one will achieve the Ultimate Sound, an illusion plenty of vinyl junkies share.

Yes, but also with the nuttier end of the digital spectrum, too.

And even amp afficionados.

I don't think that's driven by technology so much as a persona.

Have to say I've found the sound of SETs enticing, call me a sick puppy if you will.

I've never heard a SET power / integrated amp. I suppose I need to do so in order to up my audiophile street cred.

OTOH, when I use an outboard phono stage, it's completely tube-based with passive RIAA. I uses 6DJ88 triodes. I they single-ended? Does the term even apply for small signal tubes?
