Hi guys!

I have a question if anyone can advice and help me out?

I'm listening mostly to electronic music, House, Progressive House, Tech House...

I have amplifier / dac Gustard A20H, link bellow:

I think that Amp Dac is good enough, I dont know, Im not audiophile and expert. I just want to upgrade my setup, especialy headphones.

I own headphones Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250ohm. When changed Lambskin thick earpads instead original suede to DT 770, I got better tamed highs and better bass / subbass. I was really enjoying on this setup, but I wanted more. DT 770 costs 130€, and I bought a Denon AH-D7200 headphones with hope that they would sound more powerfull with better bass. I was dissapointed, because there was somehow narrow and muffled sound. I returned them for a refund to Amazon.

I dont have any good audiostore to test different high end headphones here in my country. So next step was purchase ZMF Atticus 300 ohm headphones and Lavricable USB cable + Lavricalbe Grandline connectivity cable for Atticus. Cables was not cheap at all, almost the price of Atticus. So, when I got Atticus these days I was dissapointed again :(

I didn't like the sound. Sound on Atticus was actually very similar to Denon AH-D7200, both are wooden cups, maybe that's why, I dont know... I'm currently using original Ori Lambskin earpads, I've also tried the ZMF Hybrid earpads. Here I am convinced that this problem does not have to be solved with earpads. This is probably something else. But I still don't understand how the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (€130) with Lambskin earpads and 6.5mm single original fixed cable can sound a lot better and have better bass than the ZMF Atticus headphones for which I paid €1300, as well as the Lavricables €1100 - USB cable and the most expensive connecting cable. So for a total €2,400 I bought headphones + cables and achieved worse sound than the DT 770 Pro which is just 130€. I really don't get it... and don't get me wrong - I am not a basshead, here we are talking more about general sound or sound signature, but I really dont believe that this is like sound signature as it should be for this Atticus, because sound is poor. I also tried with the original 6.5mm cable, of course it doesn't change anything. The sound remains hollow, narrow and a little stuffy. The Beyer sound is simply the opposite, a really full sound, a better body, a wider or. spacious sound, more lively and creamier with gentle subbass. What I notice pros about Atticus is that they just have better highs. I play FLAC files, but this is not an issue as MP3s also play very similarly. The design, build quality and comfort are superb, but for me the sound is not right. I really dont know why is this.. or am I doing something wrong?

I would be glad if someone could help me somehow.
Thanks!

Throwing money at the problem won't magically give you better sound.

Best to learn about the frequency response of headphones, so that you can make informed purchasing decisions.

Here are measurements of many different headphones, including the Denon and ZMF: https://www.reddit.com/r/oratory1990/wiki/index/list_of_presets/
They predict the muffled sound for both of them. You're not doing anything wrong, that's just what they sound like.

Also, those fancy cables do literally nothing. Some $5 cables from Amazon will perform identically.

Maybe beyerdynamic just works for you. Giving the new dt700x a go could be a winner. It has a more refined version of the sound you already like.
Alternatively EQ might be able to save the ZMF headphone you have. I'm no expert on EQ though , fortunately many here at ASR are and will be able to advise. You say you're using flaks so would it safe to assume a computer is the source?

Welcome to ASR!

Both the Gustard A20H and the ZMF Atticus are reviewed here.

Per Amir's Atticus review, it needed EQ before it performed adequately. It got a "marginal" recommendation from Amir with EQ.

Also, follow @staticV3's recommendation. There is very little correlation between price and sound quality. (Not to say that all expensive headphones sound poorly, but enough of them do.) Learn to apply EQ for headphones and how to read the graphs. And please don't waste money on "audiophile" cables, especially the digital ones.

Ouch! Wish you did a bit more research before you pulled the trigger on that cable purchase.

I would be glad if someone could help me somehow.

Since you already made the purchase, probably best to try the make the best out of it. If I were you, I'd give the following EQ a try and see if it makes things better if you have the means.

It wasnt just USB cable that cost me 1100€.

Cable for headphone 633€

USB cable 420€

No one mentioned an amplifier. I think Gustard hasn't enough power and is not good for pairing Atticus. I heared that for Atticus is great tube amp. I'm waiting for LYR2 and Lion tubes, hope this will fix a problem.

I also tried APO Filters, I must say that sound was a lot better but it still doesn't sound good.
Can anybody explain how does this Equalizer APO Filter works, I mean, I set Q-Factor for every Band (9 Bands) and again, immediately heard improvement.
Question, does this Filter settings for Atticus resets headphones default EQ (sound signature) to flat or something like that? What's the explanation of that?

Thanks!

:) dude, you keep throwing money at the problem and keep coming here only after you buy new things and not before, not sure why. Are you worried we are going to stop you from buying expensive toys, because if that is the case you need not worry, most of us are here because we like new expensive toys and wanna make sure our toys are the best.

Let me try to show how I would fish if I were you.

You got to ZMF website and check impedance and sensitivity data of the headphones you own, paying attention to units for sensitivity.

You go to digizoid and check how much power the headphone requires to reach high enough levels. If you can not remember the website name (which I never can) google calculate headphone power requirements.

You enter the specs of your headphone here. Important to check you have selected the correct units for Sensitivity - db SPL/mW in this case.

Looks like 40mW amp should be enough.

Next is to check whether your amp can manage 40mW at acceptable distortion levels. Your amp's case seems to be an interesting one (something that could have been avoided if the fact checking could have been done prior to the purchase) in that it seem Amir's measurements do not match the claimed specs of the manufacturer. Here is the review.

Looks like the amp can still produce enough power to drive the headphones properly though

For EQ, Equalizer APO might not be the app of the year for user interface design, so there are other apps that provide a friendlier user interface to set up equalization. Peace is a popular one. You can download and install it, and enter the values I have shared using that interface.
