Wiim Ultra as Streamer Only --> RME ADI-2 FS DAC?

It’s kind of amusing when you realize that both more “experienced” and less “experienced” listeners are better/more objective at hearing differences.

So, there is no measurable and therefore no audible difference between optical or USB connection?
It’s a computer, that does a simple and unchallenging conversion in a range of frequencies that are easy to render.

The connections are just data. Why would you think there would be a difference? If there were a difference, how do you suppose more challenging applications function??? Audio signals are easy.

Just for anyone who is thinking about this option. I have both the Wiim Ultra and an ADI-2 FS. The Wiim ultra is connected via HDMI Arc to my LG G4 which works like a charm. Before I had the Adi Dac via optical cable directly connected to the TV and the sound quality was perfect, but the functionality with the adi remote lacked of comfort. The Wiim is just perfect in terms of usability but it lacks of sound quality. Now I have connected the Adi Dac via optical to the Wiim and to my surprise it manages the volume control through the optical connection. Now I have the best of both worlds, the sound is superp again and the volume control via HDMI arc. PEQ is used in Adi Dac and turned off in Wiim. Wonderful solution, but expensive. I would have preferred an all in one solution but the TV is wall mounted and all devices hide between the small gap between wall and TV. Just for anyone wondering the Adi is connected via XLR to a purifi et400a. Adi and purifi turn on via a 12v triggered plug.

Are you using the LG remote to control the volume for wiim ultra (which in turn changes volume for adi-2 over toslink)? And does the TV show a volume bar or does it just show just the + and - sign without any visual bar?

The Wiim has a variable digital output. There is no control of the Adi.

So I understand that the sound is better simply because of the different DAC (Adi) and not the connection itself as you still use HDMI to connect TV and Wiim. You just pass the signal forward via optical and use the Adi as DAC. Plus you can use XLR connection which could make a slight difference in SQ.

Am I correct?

Bottom line - it is vanishingly unlikely that what the poster is hearing is coming from the sound waves. The DAC in the ultra is audibly perfect, and there will be no benefit going to an external device due to a different DAC. You can get benefits if (for example) the external device implements better DSP/EQ - or as I posted in my other reply to you, you have audible noise, and want to use an optical connection or balanced analogue connections to eliminate it.

Yes, I've read your replies and I'm with you here. That's why I asked. It first seemed to me to be a problem with the HDMI connection, but the only thing that really changed in the config was the DAC ...

I was just curious because I'm my case a separate DAC with balanced outputs would let me use the XLR inputs of my power amp.
