WiiM Pro with external DAC: can WiiM control volume?

Looking at using my WiiM Pro (not plus) with a DAC to amp to Revel outdoor speakers. Will controlling volume with WiiM application work with external DAC? Is there an advantage or disadvantage doing this vs. getting a WiiM Pro PLUS (with the upgraded internal DAC) and omitting an external DAC altogether?

Yes.

Is there an advantage or disadvantage doing this vs. getting a WiiM Pro PLUS (with the upgraded internal DAC) and omitting an external DAC altogether?

Advantage of the Pro Plus would be fewer boxes and power supplies laying around and you still get 100% transparent D->A conversion.

Disadvantage is that the Pro Plus' DAC only outputs RCA, so no differential Amps and no interference-blocking XLR cables.
