I am so old that I actually had a monophonic system back in the day.

Me, too, but now I deeply committed to multichannel (and no vinyl for many years).
Yes, I do like collecting multich these days, just wasn't interested in the days where it was only vinyl based....altho some of those mixes/masters are still around and in use.....

But you can also use Sporicidin... it's cheaper, and it's not a specialised vinyl cleaner - but it does a good job too...
Just go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get a Reverse Osmosis water treatment system
Be sure not to get one that includes the re-mineralizer system.
Then add about an ounce of denatured alcohol to a gallon of water.
You'll make your own vinyl cleaner solution plus save the oceans from millions of plastic bottles. ;)

The water without the alcohol makes great healthy drinking water.
I love my system and never spent a better $200

I thought that there was some enzyme that works on fats or oils?
And that it was not a “General Ripper” blend of rainwater and pure alcohol.

I'm so old, I worked in a store that sold Edison Cylinders. (Really, I did).

I still play some vinyl and actually have a second turntable set up in mono.

It's 8pm here, still working but listening to Joe Henderson (best of mix from "double rainbow", "lush life" and "so near, so far") through the JDS Labs Element 3 and Beyerdynamic DT1990Pro headphones while I do. I am old enough to remember this sound quality was absolutely impossible no matter how many $ you spent back in the day. What an awesome time to be an audio aficionado.

Oh absolutely. I remember our dream as audiophiles back in the 1960-70s was to have our own perfect copy of the master tape.
Then CD came and our prayers were mostly answered. I can remember hearing my first CD in my system, Dire Straights - Brothers In Arms and just about having an orgasm. :p The sound quality was way beyond anything I'd ever heard on my system and I just couldn't wait to replace my entire library with this awesome new music technology. Today, high def streaming has brought that audio quality for a large percentage of the worlds music library into our homes for a minimal monthly fee, undreamed of just a decade or so back.
Futures so bright, I gotta wear shades.

Yes there were many problems with the vinyl based quad sources (along with 8 track tapes) that held the market back. A shame since many of the quad masters from that time were excellent. I'm sure many here have heard the digital quad releases that have been put out from the Pink Floyd masters from back then, awesome.

I started wearing RayBan Wayfarers, and/or the Clint Eastwood (Dirty Harry) style wraparounds… around the same time.

Yes… the TT was that stunning.

I guess the tech was nice… but the companions that listened to it were relaxed, so I did not consider sexualising the CD player.
I either had a smoke or a nap, or I flipped it over and embarked upon playing the B side...

“Brothers in Arms”… I guess I should try it before I knock it...
(But I had never thought of “Dire Straights” as being a double entendre.)

You might as well try to enter a Model T Ford in a 2023 Formula 1 race. ROTFLMAO

Pure water is the absolute best solvent known to humanity.... wonderful stuff...

But once Mold starts to embed its little tentacles into the vinyl, you need something that will literally break it appart at the molecular level.

Leave some enzyme on it for a few hours.... then follow with other more usual treatments, Ultrasonics are good for seperating things that have embedded themselves into the vinyl at least partly... but you can also use creeping lubricants like armor-all - the chemicals in that, will gradually penetrate in the microscopic cracks between a dust molecule or piece of grit, and the vinyl that is holding it in place (usually because it has been played dusty, and the dirt has been pressed into the vinyl by the needle!)... after some hours/days, following an armor-all treatment with a thorough clean (preferably ultrasonic, but it could be vacc) - will release a surprising amount of grit from some records!

These are all cheap treatments! - ArmorAll also leaves a microscopic layer of lubricant - and that can help too - reduces needle drag, but also reduces grit/dust sticking (and assuming you have properly cleaned it after the armor all treatment, won't leave any residue on the needle either)

More expensive treatments include much more expensive lubricants - look up fomblin - high tech, very expensive, bonds to vinyl, and results in a teflon like effect - tiny amounts of it are present in LAST record preservative - it is the not so secret ingredient... it is real, it works, but whether the tiny amounts used in LAST provide the claimed for effect is a whole different ball of wax... however it is not an ingredient you can easily or cheaply purchase for DIY home mixes (sadly).

I am not sure if Armor-All a good idea? I once made the mistake of using it on my car's dashboard. It looked great, and then dust seemed to get embedded in it in a way that I could only get it off by using some detergent, whereas normally a wipe with some water would do. Oh yes, another reason not to use Armor-All on dashboards: the sun makes it outgas and stick on the inside of the windscreen. Once it is there, it attracts dust. No amount of wiping gets it off, you really have to go to town with detergents and alcohol.
