I love driving drummers, where the energy of that instrument propels and carries the song forward - the sense then is that all the rest of musical content is madly trying to keep up; it creates an urgency and vibrancy to the listening which I find captivating ... this is one of the better examples I know of, but will probably require well sorted audio to reveal,

That's sounds very interesting, worth the purchase Ray?

Erik Charlston - JazzBrasil - Essentially Hermeto

0gp23ws2.j31

"“I’ve always loved Hermeto’s music: its energy, absolute originality, audacity and beauty. Oh yes, and it grooves like mad. Hermeto’s music, like that of other great composers, benefits from interpretation, and although it will sound different in new contexts, it will always be undeniably his music. The challenge of putting a group together to interpret it became irresistible,” says Charlston. "

Wiki:
"Among Ogerman's most remarkable albums there are: Gate Of Dreams (WB 1977), from the music of the ballet Some Times; Cityscape with Michael Brecker (1982 Warner-Pioneer); Claus Ogerman Featuring Michael Brecker (GRP 1991). All include original compositions centered around the juxtaposition of jazz instruments and rhythm sections with classical music orchestra."

When I'm learning new material, I like to listen to a few different arrangements, then stop listening, sit down and play without referencing the recordings any more. It helps me get to my own interpretation of a song instead of just mimicking an existing recording. Recently, I was learning the R&B classic, I Put A Spell On You. I listened to the one most people know, from CCR, a beautiful arrangement on an Annie Lennox album, then I ran across this...

Van Morrison/Them. When Van was just a boy. OMG...
