It looks more like a USB extender appliance that's been rebranded for audio. ie. it just converts USB to optical so you can "ship" the USB around the house, far further than the 5m USB affords.

Home theatre types often use this type of device and another for HDMI so they can put their stuff centrally in the basement, but watch/listen/control in any part of the house.
