Hi, i am a newbie so sorry if it's a dumb question. Anyone use the D50 iii as a digital "preamp"? I don't want to damage my speakers so is it like a preamp setting in the menu that you choose and then save the settings? Thought about using it with a poweramp.

Trust your intuition. Yes there’s built volume control and it should generally work but the inherent danger to fry your speakers exists. The DAC can forget its settings and send full output to the amp and there were reports this did happen (not necessarily with this particular DAC). Couple of things you can do to mitigate the risks. Turn the DAC on before powering on the amp and ensure the volume is at a safe level. Use Inline attenuators to limit the signal level that can reach the amp even if the DAC suddenly outputs at full volume.

I don't think it's very suitable for one reason. If you don't use it for a while the remote system goes to sleep and it can take a long time to make it respond again
