Only starting to enjoy music late in life. On a whim I bought a pair of SONOS play 5 Gen 1 speakers from facebook marketplace. Was really cheap and works like new so been lucky. I have no physical collection of CDs, records, cassetes etc and everything is in my NAS (mostly mp3 and flac). This setup has been great as currently I listen to SONOS radio (mostly jazz) and music files in my NAS. The SONOS S1 app works well but I don't know how long SONOS will/can continue to support legacy devices. So I am starting to look for a "proper" replacement.

I wanted to start with something integrated and add more gear from there. I don't plan to spend a lot (my finance minister won't let me). So I am here for recommendations. I initially want to "replicate" my current setup by investing in say a new Wiim Ultra, 2 passive speakers (maybe used) and an active sub (maybe used). What I do not know is can I easily add more gear to Wiim Ultra to improve this setup? By adding more gear I mean maybe a CD player and amplifier?

Yes you can.

Though note that the WiiM Ultra does not have a built-in Amp, so adding an Amp is mandatory if you want to use passive speakers.

Though I'd steer you towards active speakers instead, in which case no external Amp would be required.

Wiim amp or amp pro would be better for passive

Thanks for your comments. Looked quickly at Wiim Ultra before and did not realise it does not come with an amp. I have never owned active speakers (only active sub) and will check it out.

Here's the ideal starting point for anyone looking for new speakers: https://www.spinorama.org/

It's a collection of anechoic loudspeaker measurements from all over the internet.

Best tip KCSM.org, Jazz 24/7/365 no commercials
