Just started out and been listening to a pair of SONOS Play 5 Gen 1 speakers and a Sonos Sub Gen 2 for a year. Bought used from marketplace. Satisfied listening to mainly easy going songs and jazz. Not into heavy stuff.

I recently scored a Sonos Connect Amp Gen 2 very cheaply on marketplace. Been curious if this amp, a set of passive speakers and an active sub can sound better than my current setup. Basically want to know how much I need to spend on speakers and sub to sound better than my current setup.

Hope someone can give me some pointers.

Mostly just too vague a question and far too subjective on the face of it.

Although they're considered 'lifestyle' speakers, the Sonos Play 5 are very capable, and pairing a full size Sonos Sub with them should provide satisfying bass. If you've used TruePlay (hope I remember the name right!) to handle room EQ them should give you excellent sound.

The good news: there is not a budget that guarantees you're going to get a better sound by trying to do the same thing differently! I'd actually wager there's a lot of money you can spend to give you worse sound.

Virtues of your current system:
  • Room EQ is built in
  • Sonos handles Speaker + Sub integration
  • Each speaker has the amplifier power it needs
  • No signal wires, only power!
If I were to try to match your setup, I'd look for a used SVS subwoofer (budget $500), and a used pair of good bookshelf speakers, let's call them Revel M16's for another $500. So, let's say for $1000 or so you could get nowhere, and have a lot more fiddling to do to get good integration of speakers and sub. :)

If you can provide specific limitations of your current setup, we may be able to help solve them. But for now, you can rest easy knowing you're well equipped to enjoy the music you're already enjoying!
