SMSL D-6s Balanced DAC Review

I'v updated the schematic:
- The AVCC buffer OpAmp is supplied by +11V / Gnd. (using the +5V is indeed not possible due to input common-mode range of OPA1612A)
- The SGM3710 is supplied by +12V / Gnd. It has an internal charge pump delivering -12V.
this is nice! I wander what feedback caps values are?

While modifying AVCC, I had a closer look at the implementation of the AVCC generation, the I/V-stage and RCA output stage.

Schematic:
I didn't unsolder the caps so I couldn't measure them and I forgot to check the AVCC-buffer negative supply (Gnd would do the job and there's only one decoupling cap, so very likely its +11V / Gnd).
The output stage seems to be a very straightforward I/V stage without de-glitching Cap and without elaborated Common-Mode measures. The ES9039 seems to be well behaved compared to the ES9038 (ESS-hump in IMD- plots) such that these measures are not necessary (the excellent results of Amir's measurements speak for themselves). SMSL choose a potentiometer to do the DC-nulling of the outputs; some other schemes would do this without manual adjustment. It might be, that the potentiometer- solution is the lowest-noise implementation.
The RCA- output amplifier simply subtracts the XLR outputs, applies a gain of ca. 0.5 and does some additional filtering.
The muting is performed by the well known SG3710. This chip seems to have a charge-pump for the internal negative supply such that it can handle +/-11V signal voltage range with just +11V supply. The active-path has an on-resistance of ca. 1 Ohm and the muted-path has ca. 11 Ohms which perfectly makes sense in terms of distortion (low and flat Ron in active position) and chip area (when muted).

AVCC generation:
- LP2985-50 regulator (5.0V)
- resistive voltage divider (R1 / R2 in my schematic); I would have loved to see MELF resistors (metal film) in this position because the tiny 0402 resistors would certainly make some excess current noise in case they are thick-film. Possibly SMSL was considerate and used 0402 thin-film (metal-film) resistors here. This resistive divider brings down the 5V to ca. 3.67V. (In case there is excess current noise, it shows up common-mode at the XLR and at the substractor for the RCA- output such that it will be eliminated to a large extend. So it would be ok. even if the divider consists of thick-film resistors)
- there is some filtering applied. There are two ceramic SMD caps that form an RC-filter with the source-resistance of the divider network.
- the dual OpAmp OPA1612 does the buffering for both channels separately with a capacitor between output and Gnd to bring down the impedance for high frequencies (this is in principal risky (capacitive loading of the OpAmp), but when the cap is large enough, the cap will bring the loop-gain down far enough and the circuit will not oscillate.
EDIT: AVCC buffer U2 might be supplied by +5V / Gnd. I have to check next time I have the unit open.

AVCC modification:
I did not feel comfortable with a AVCC_DAC supply voltage close to the absolute maximum ratings and I looked for a simple modification that is fully reversible.
Since AVCC is generated using a resistive voltage divider, it is straight-forward to simply modify this divider. I decided not to change one of the tiny 0402 resistors, but instead solder a resistor in parallel to R2 (the resistor that goes to Gnd). Soldering a 0603 resistor on top of one of the two filter caps (that are in parallel to R2) is a very conveniant and safe way (see photo).
A parallel resistor with 22k will bring AVCC down to approximately 3.31V. It would be nice to use a metal-film (thinfilm) resistor - see above).
In case you decide to do this modification, you can check the result by measuring AVCC at the outputs of the OPA1612. There is a footprint where no SMD component is fitted (see photo). AVCC should be ca. 3.31V after the modification.
(I would recommend to check AVCC before and after the modification; SMSL might have changed the resistor values during production such that it needs a different value for the parallel resistor).
EDIT: I would also check the offset voltage on the XLR outputs. The "+" and "-" are a bit different and both should be within ca. +/-1 ... 2mV compared to Gnd. If this is not the case you can adjust the small potentiometers located between DAC-chip and OpAmps. For both of my units no re-adjustment was necessary.
The RCA output is close to 0mV anyway because it subtracts "+" and "-" of the XLR.

Output level:
The output current of the DAC scales with AVCC such that a reduction of AVCC will reduce the output voltage by the same ratio. 20*log(3.309/3.665) = -089dB
Noise:
I would expect that the noise does not scale with AVCC. I did measure something like 0.2 dB less noise with AVCC = 3.31V, but in case this is real, it's basically "academic"
Distortion:
Within my measuring capabilities I did not observe increased distortion with AVCC = 3.31V compared to 3.67V. Measurement condition was 1 kHz sinewave at 0dBFS generated with REW. I did measure with a passive notch filter and an Audio-Precision Portable-One as analog frontend for the (not so nice) USB audio-interface. A second instance of the REW with Real-Time-Analyzer was used to observe the spectrum. With "coherent averaging" (a method that suppresses non-harmonic noise) I can measure down to ca. -140dBc.
(I verfied the distortion measurement capability by adding -120dBFS of k2 and k3 (in REW); these lines then rose by almost 20dB).

Conclusion AVCC modification:
Bringing down AVCC to the nominal value of 3.3V (+/-5% according to the datasheet) will lower the output level by ca. 0.9dB. Since noise does not (or only little) scale with AVCC, SINAD will be worse by ca. 0.7 ... 0.9dB. This has no practical relevance to my humble opinion, but it would surely affect the position of the D-6s in the "Best in SINAD" plot.
As already mentioned, I do assume ESS has designed the ES9039 for 24/7 and for customers expecting a lifetime >10 years. It is therefore very possible that the D-6s "as produced" will work as expected for many, many years. Being familiar with CMOS IC design and product qualification, I just felt I should trade 1dB in SINAD for a good conscience :)

PS: I'm absolutely happy with this DAC. It looks nice, the features are just perfect and -last not least - it has a stellar performance.

I was actually thinking to upgrade opa1612 opamps to sparkos. Just two that are I/V converters. There are sooc8 to dip8 adapters out there. But I was wondering about the feedback cap - should it be adjusted for those new sparkos opamps? Thanks!

I did not unsolder the caps, so unfortunately I do not know their values.

The FB-capacitors in the I/V stage will be in the nF range in order to provide some analog filtering.
To my opinion it is not reasonable to change their values - except you want to change the filter properties.

In my units the OpAmps are not SOIC8, but the smaller package the OPA1612 is offered in. The photos of the PCB (edit: on their website) suggest they are SOIC8, but I guess SMSL has changed the footprint later due to availability reasons.
There is no combi-footprint implemented in the PCB layout. It will thus be difficult and risky to swap OpAmps.
The OPA1612 is a really good OpAmp - I would be wondering if there would be a measureable difference - not to talk about this being audible. I suggest you save this money.

SMSL has changed the footprint from SOIC8 to SON8, the size of the solder joints is very small and currently I have not found any similar conversion adapter. A bit complicated for those without sufficient soldering skills
 
Hey y'all if I'm reading the spec sheets correctly it does not look like it has a dual ES9039Q2M dacs. Am I wrong, and does that have anything to do with being balanced?

Hi @nickorye! Welcome to ASR.

The D-6s uses a single ES9039Q2M chip.

It has nothing to do with being balanced. A single chip is enough for proper balanced output

Thanks @staticV3 So having a fully balanced architecture is not necessary for balanced outputs. Guess I'm confused because the D-6 has a pair of AKM chips with trs balanced outputs, but then the topping E70 says its fully balanced and only appears to have 1 AK4499EX chip. I bought this to replace my SMSL SU-8 which had dual ES3098Q2 chips.

Sometimes they add another DAC to raise the SINAD number just a bit more, no other reason. One single DAC can be enough for balanced output, depending on design.
A new SMSL has 16x DAC chips..

That statement doesn't make a lot of sense.

Maybe this helps:

Having two DAC chips is not required for differential output. Many DAC chips have native, differential output built-in, so one chip is enough.

Differential output is not required for a Line connection to be balanced.

Balanced and differential are two separate attributes of Line audio.

Balanced <-> Unbalanced
Differential <-> Single-ended

Most Single-ended Line outs are Unbalanced and most Differential Line outs are Balanced.

But a Single-ended Balanced Line out is very much a possibility.

Bal/Unbal describes the ratio of input and output impedances.

SE/Diff describes the nature of the signal.

What enables a DAC->Amp system to reject noise is impedance balance, coupled with a differential input.

Differential output OTOH does not inherently serve a purpose, afaik.
 
Thanks for the reply @staticV3 I guess what I had originally thought was that a dual dac architecture like the others mentioned meant it had one dac chip decoding per channel which was the reason it was balanced, and each had its own signal path(L and R) to each individual output. Looks something like this. I hope this clears up my thought process and confusion.

Your confusion makes sense.

This is already balanced, differential output (two signals per channel, hot and cold):

The rest is just summing of multiple outputs for improved SNR.
 
Hi guys. I'm receiving my new SMSL D6s tomorrow and had a quick question.

I have a pair of Rotel power amps and a pair of BKL subs. All have RCA inputs. Am I better off splitting the RCA out from the D6s to feed both amps and subs or can I use a pair of XLR to RCA adapters to feed the subs and feed the power amps from the RCA? I'm bi-amping the Rotels so only need one set of RCAs for the speakers.

You're better off splitting the RCA output and leaving the XLR output disconnected.

I'm only buying this to free up my Fiio K7 to use as a headamp next to my seating position so not expecting miracles. Just need a competent DAC and preamp that's clean, easy to use and has a remote.
 
Do yo actually know how the filters in the d-6s relate to the ones described in the datasheet of the ES9039Q2M?
Did SMSL use the same numbering like in the datasheet?

Filters are on page 29 cont.

The numbering is different and the names are incorrectly used by SMSL. FL1 is ESS #8 and FL2 - FL7 are ESS #1 - #6. This is evident from comparing the D-6S manual with the ES9039Q2M data sheet and the measurements by Amir and @dsnyder0cnn. I explain it in this thread.
 
Very similar SMPS with OB2263 pwm ic. SMSL has used this design for most of their entry and mid range DAC

Well, would you rather have a linear transformer that costs more and larger than an entire D6S and yet potentially result in worse DAC performance by being much more susceptible to stray magnetic fields? :p
 
As an owner of this device I thought I'd throw in my tuppence worth, as it might be helpful to some people thinking of buying one. As a vinyl lover at heart, digital is secondary but I needed to upgrade my ageing Korg DS-DAC-100m that kept glitching (very annoyingly but probably due to using a long USB extender cable) and needs its own player software (AudioGate) to get the best performance, so I bought the D6s instead of the Topping D50 III after seeing it was significantly cheaper, with balanced outputs and no annoying wall-wart PSU. I have no need for the EQ on the D50 III, as I rarely use headphones. I'm also probably one of the few who like the design and prefer it to the D50 III - for me that was part of the attraction. I like the minimalist, single colour, frosted look of the display and that it protrudes above the casing is somewhat quirky and interesting. It feels solid enough and probably could not be detached by snagging with a shirt cuff, as someone suggested might be an issue. I also think that because it's the front-end source, like a turntable or CD player, that it would be stacked on top of everything else, meaning the protruding display is not an issue, but that's just me and I haven't got mine stacked on anything - it sits next to my turntable and would look pretty silly stacked on top of my AN Oto SE amp, for which this DAC is a fairly decent match in terms of sonics - a massive upgrade over the Korg for not much more money.

I might upgrade to an Audio Note DAC at some point if/when I'm more wealthy, because I'm a sucker for AN gear but for the price this is an absolute no-brainer that I'm extremely happy with. it sounds excellent (musical, dynamic, holographic, accurate and large) making the looks somewhat irrelevant to me, as it's all about the sound at the end of the day - anything extra at this price is a bonus. It also has a USB input, which the AN DACs don't have (although the ANK kits do), which I find useful in my setup.
